And quite frankly I'm crapping myself.

Firstly, it's the Gay Pride Parade in Belfast. I have no issue with Gay Pride whatsoever, except that they have a ton of floats and it's a big party RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF BELFAST AND I HAVE TO DRIVE THROUGH IT. Well, I can drive around it, but it's giving me extra stress I don't need. Sorry guys and gals xx

I need a big op on my shoulder. I've been putting it off for two years, well sort of. This is the good old NHS and they took so long to see me the govt transferred me out to the private sector because it was taking an age. Then it took ages for all the investigations and MRIs and X-Rays and shit. Then the consultant who was seeing me got the sack, so I had to go back and see a different person.

Upshot, I get my date on Saturday for my op. Should be within 2-3 weeks

I need repair to my rotator cuffs, decompression of my shoulder nerve (or something I think that's what she said), removal of calcific deposits in the tendons and decompression of my neck.

I won't be able to drive for weeks.

And I am a single parent and live alone, although No1 son has promised to be chauffeur and cook so I won't starve. Well, I hope not and no2 son says he'll kick the girls up the butt to get them to help plenty.

Has anyone on here had this kind of surgery? I'm in a horrific amount of pain, normal plus nerve pain. I take painkillers like candy (smarties, for the Brits lol) and they don't help. The doc suggested morphine patches, but I don't want to go there.

I have not, but I know a bit about it. It is frightening for you I am sure. I cannot imagine how relieved to be getting it, yet so fearful with the children. I will be praying everything goes smoothly for you. That being said, it really should. It is not uncommon, and having tbe procedures done as one should really help you heal in the long run. Many doctors drag it out, doing this or that seperately or trying smaller fixes. The key is to rest. The more you sleep, the faster your healing time will be. I assume youwill get pt/ot, and though it will notbe the greatest thing, it will do so much for your strengthening and overall cardio. Take advantage of those services. Let them whip you into shape like the supermom you are!at least over here, therapists will provide you with nutritional guidance and whole health information. Plus, you finally get a break!I know its not fun, but put your feet up and relax afterwards.enjoy them doting onyou while it lasts.
Your pain after the initial heal of the surgery should be so much less than what I imagine you struggle with, at least occassionally, now.

Thank you.

I should clarify - my girls are here half the time, they are 11 and 14, the boys are older and live away from home.

The pain today has been horrific. I am maxed out on painkillers. And it's still at the point of making me sweat and nearly pass out from pain at times.

Im sosorry to hear that. I wouldnt wish chronic pain on my worst enemy.I wont ask you if you have found the myraid of nonprescription pain methods helpful, because I know most dont. For myself, I do angry music. With words. I do not like taking pain meds, so when they sent me home after my surgery I basically refocused my pain and only took the antiinflammstories and steroids. placed pressure and laid still with my loud music and its lyrics till Id fall asleep or vomit. Its like crazy woman meditation maybe. But I have NO familial responsibilities that I cant wiggle out of, and theres a lot of addiction in my family.
I dont know that I can say anything too helpful to you.im sure your med staff prepped you. And Im sure you are sick of hearing it.but if you need to vent or complain about pain, I can listen. And even if we arent the same religion, I can pray.
Im very happy you are getting your surgery.sounds long overdue. Try to focus on how much better you will feel later.
Cyber hugs

I have a friend who has had several major dental surgeries (which are certainly no slouch in the pain department) without an anesthetic thanks to hypnosis. Just a thought, if there's somebody competent in your area.

I had my right rotator cuff done arthroscopically about 10 years ago.
According to my therapist, I had one of the best shoulder guys in this part of the country.
I had the bicep tendon screwed back into my shoulder, several ligaments reattached and a couple of bone spurs ground down.
I had the surgery on a Friday and hauled my groggy ass into my desk job on Monday (I wasn't very damn useful but I was there)
They put a pain pump in and it stayed in for a week. I was able to drive with the caveat that if I did something stupid and the air bag went off, I was fucked.
Rehab started 3 days post surgery with passive range of motion and progressed to light weights then I got homework exercises.
I was mowing the yard in about 6-8 weeks and using a chain saw after 4 months (that's where I discovered pure purple pain when a surgical adhesion ripped loose).
Total healing time is about a year but I'm still pain free and the shoulder is in better shape than it was before the injury.

Oh thank you that is exactly what I need to hear! I'm so glad it went well for you and that you were able to drive and things so soon - she told me scary stories of not doing anything for 8 weeks which is just not sustainable for me. I'm very very glad it worked for you.

I've 3 of the four tendons to get reattached. She doesn't think it'll work as a scope surgery, and I'll probably have a shark bite scar. Thankfully, I'm not young or vain and I think a shark bite would be kinda cool, think of the tall tales I could tell the grandkids (If I ever have any)

If you can't be scoped, you will probably take longer to heal. Make damn sure that you have someone to drive you and wait on you the first day because you'll be incoherent.
Also, general anesthesia frequently causes big time constipation. A little magnesium citrate goes a long way but if you drink any make damn sure you don't get too far from a bathroom it's like dynamite.
Any other questions, you can email me on the other side if you wish.

Thank you, again.

No1 son is driving me, as he's going to watch the surgery (he's off to med school in sept) so he has to earn his viewing rights lol. I have movicol and other stuff due to codeine blockages, so I should be sorted in that dept lol

How glamorous, huh?

Hopefully we'll see you back here in a couple of months telling us how much better you feel. Arnica is good for healing. Check with your surgeon if you can take it, you should start a week before, I think. Lots of good advice here, try not to overdo it. Recovery takes time.

The other half has had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders and a repeat on one of them. Even with the scope, a lot of what HillWilliam said above applied. The last time around, we lived in a place called Paso Robles, CA, which is the roaming hills of wine country in Central CA. There was no driving for him during his recovery because of the twists in the road into town and the high population of deer in the area.

Physical therapy did start for him just days afterward, too. It's not fun, but if you are going to want your range of motion back, you have to be dedicated.

If you happen to like flogging people, be very mindful of the fact that the same motion used for that is exactly the same movements used that the doc is going to warn you about when he starts cautioning you about things like tennis and golf. It's a very easy way to tear the work that's been done so you may want to alter your play style for a bit.

Ya know, it just never occurred to me to get a date when I'm having surgery.

Although frankly, it kinda makes sense.

The anaesthesia doesn't cause constipation - the narcotics do. And the best thing for that is fruit - lots and lots of fruit. Grapes are wonderful because they have plenty of fiber and are juicy.

You are going to need your painkillers, but the side effects can be managed. Just remember - fiber is your friend!

I am in the UK and have had keyhole surgery done twice for a rotar cuff tear, same shoulder. The second time was just to clean away some more debris. Each time I was allowed home the following day and while the pain isnt as bad as it was, its still there. Although its moved from my wrist and lower arm to my shoulder as the pain is from scar tissue.

Look on the bright side, I have had a partial knee replacement...... The shoulder, by comparison, was a doddle. Hillwill mentioned the physiotherapy afterwards... Dont overdo it, ie too strenuously, but DONT think you are okay once the pain eases. The excercies help rebuild muscle.

Good luck.

Bloody hell, Misdressed, it sounds like you need a helicopter engineer rather than a surgeon. Good luck!

I haven't had any of these procedures done on me, but have helped several people recover from them as PT is my field. Don't skimp on the PT, do what they tell you to do and you'll recover and be in better shape than you are now. Stick with the exercises they tell you to do at home, they'll likely give you some right away from the hospital, and follow the instructions they give you on how much to use it and what motions to avoid. The tendons are weakest 7-10 days after the repair, be careful then.

When you can start pushing for range of motion again it's going to hurt, push yourself so you get back as much as possible. I had a few patients who had very low pain tolerance and let that dictate how hard they were willing to push...they'll have a deficit now probably for life. If you can, don't let that limit you. Recovery won't be easy, but as it's been pointed out, at least you'll get better and you aren't now. Don't be embarrassed when your at PT and such and if something hurts and you show it, it happens.

I did have a broken shoulder and a broken wrist 3 summers ago, it was hell to come back from, I thought I'd be in pain forever and finally things healed up and life went on. PT helped me get back to normal and although it hurt like a son of a bitch I'm glad I followed their recommendations even though I hollered and screamed at times in the gym during treatment I did keep pushing till I got my full range of motion back in both arms. My kids had to help me through that, and they were champs. Stock up on frozen meals
