"Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns" is very informative and helpful as well.

I'm only half way through John's book *S*

For the brand 'spanking' new, I'd say Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns. It's a fun read and has a great directory in the back.

[Clearing throat] While it has been said that my ego is as boundless as the sea, I really can't lay claim to Different Loving.  It was written by three other people.

I depends how new you are. A lot of the information in books available, is readily available on websites or by interacting in forums such as this one, discussing issues with people live..and all thats free.

I just recently ordered a few books, (still waiting on 2 to arrive) basically because they are mentioned on these forums a lot and Ive never read them, I wanted to read for myself what people found so fascinating and informative.  From what Ive read so far, I'm not really impressed. I don't mean that in an offensive way and perhaps if I had picked them up when I was really new they would have taken on a new fascinating light but where I am now it was like "ho hum".

So the question I would like to ask again is, how new are you? and " What do you want to get out of the book?". Answering those questions might narrow down peoples suggestions to more suit what you are actually looking for and make your gift purchase more of value to you.

Jali, I am curious which ones you are refering to?  I have a feeling you are speaking of Dossie's books, but I am curious what it is you find lacking.

For a submissive, 'The Pillow Book' DVD or book. Or find a copy of the original it was based upon the book of the same name by Sei Shonagon if you can get it on amazon.

Otherwise - if you want something more direct - I would recommend Mr Warrens also.  'Screw' is good and is humerous too, but 'Loving D' is more unbiased IMO.

slavejali,

I am not terribly new.   I lived D/s for five years.  My Dominant was involved with the local community, and my education was limited to what best served Him and within the confines of that community. That relationship ended almost three years ago.

Now that I have ventured out, I have read more and become active in a new community after a cross country move.  This has been for the last 1.5 years.

I have only been reading the websites and forums for just over a year.  It was during that time I was seeking.  I am no longer seeking, and am preparing to go 24/7 again.

One of the things I want from a book is a new way of looking at things, or a new way of thinking about things.  A broadening of perspective.  This can come through new information, a way of looking at old information, or a collection of empirical data with a discussion.

Truthfully, I can probably find a lot of new ideas in the older publications.  I wanted to see what books have had an impact on other submissives.  Look them up, and see which one fits.

John Warren's book has come up in several recommendation conversations I have had with local submissive friends.  I plan on visiting the website to find out if it is a good match for me.

Being an avid reader, I am sure I will not read just one book.  I will, however, only read one at a time during this busy period of my life.

Sweetness,

If you have the sort of experience you speak of, I think you might truly enjoy a book that covers things that are either more complex or covers them in more depth.  I have read "Consensual Sadomasochism" any number of times and always pull new things from it.

The Topping Book and The Bottoming Book are also ones that while short, cover many things and in more interesting ways than many other books.

Man, no one mentioned SM 101, so there you go.  It's by Jay Wiseman.  i'd also recommend The Compleat Slave by Jack Rinella.

Since, lo those many months ago when I was called "zebra," I wrote an off-forum note to John Warren to thank him for writing that book, I'm safely out of "she must be sucking up" territory, I think. lol. I felt it would be a good idea, as a submissive, to read about dominance, since it was the role I was less likely to understand. I haven't found a dom, but I still love the book and hope it gives me some insight when/if I do. So that's why I recommend it, as a sub, to a sub.

littlesarbonn -> RE: As a submissive, if you were to recommend one lifestyle book . . . (6/27/2006 6:42:45 PM)

For me, even though it was fiction, Grant Andrews's "Submission". After reading it, I realized how much my fantasies were tied into the concept that is built from that book.

I'm not a real fan of most other lifestyle books, as I tend to believe that living the lifestyle is a much better exploration model than reading about it. I know that one of my first reads was Gini Graham Scott's book, and I was convinced she was the great expert, UNTIL I actually held a conversation with her at a play party and realized that sometimes a good book is based on less substance than one might suspect.
