ps... when you die I ask you to please come back and tell me if you really die or move on to another existence.

I already 'died'. I did become a supergenius partly due to that event; so, yeah, I moved on into another existence. I now have an aversion against dying again.

MadameMarque -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 11:22:55 AM)

I believe there is an absolute truth, but observe that our perception of it is subjective and of the latter there is sufficient proof. I tend to wonder why we're built that way. But then, maybe reality doesn't have an intentional reason, and that's another discussion.

kdsub -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 11:24:28 AM)

There is of course only one reason... emotion

jlf1961 -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 11:40:04 AM)

My choice is not listed.

However while scientific truth is provable and therefore absolute...

Human truth is subjective due to point of view or perspective.

I have seen in both the legal system and in everyday life, two people telling different versions of the same incident, and both versions were true, and provably true when approached from the point of view from each witness.

Or to put it another way, a child comes crying to mother saying he fell and hurt himself.

Mom knows that if he had not been standing on a stool he would not have fallen.

Both statements are true.

In the context of my remarks above, I meant reason in the sense of cause, causation, like, "why are we created in such a way that we perceive that there are subtle truths beyond our physical senses, yet do not perceive the same truths, have different interpretations of, do not perceive, etc - what is the cause/reason?" (Of course, even our sensory-based perceptions are not uniform, just more so than our subtle perception.)

And my question was intended, not to ask, what is the mechanism that causes one person to have a different sense of the truth than another, but a more universal question - why are we built this way? But as I say, that's another conversation.

Although, as I think you may be saying that the reason different people see things differently is due to emotion, I would tend to disagree that an individual's personal POV and filters are purely based upon emotion. I think that experience has a large role in shaping that and in shaping their emotional dispositions.

(Adding) So, a person may say, I believe something to be true because in my observation of events, it's true, which could include scientific evaluation of what's true, and would be considered about as objective as we're capable. Or, a person may have an emotional reaction that shapes their belief, such as a predominantly optimistic or pessimistic interpretation of reality.

Dyfrynt -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 1:32:28 PM)

kdsub said "If every human on earth believed the earth was flat that WOULD be the truth just as today we believe it to be round."

Umm. No. If everyone on the planet believed the earth was flat that would not change the fact that it is round.

This type of argument is very popular in American politics right now. The idea that what someone prefers to believe is fact for them. It is a fallacy; one that is destroying our ability to function as a society.

Which is why I agree with Moynihan that you are entitled to your own beliefs but you are not entitled to your own facts. The concept that someone has a right to believe what they want to believe is fine. But once they go over the line and say a fact is false because it is not what they want to believe, they are in the wrong.

again emphasizing the value of religion and the free exercise thereof.

people are expected in society today to have the same truth and facts, which is impossible unless we are to form ourselves into the Borg collective.

this would eliminate all truth outside commonly acknowledged paradigms of the time.

truth is determined by each person individually.

what is important is to know how to get to the truth and separate it from belief.

Okay Okay, I give! You are just WAYYYYYYYY to smart for me my friend. lol.

Now what did you say? oh mama meea

And that's the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

kdsub -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 2:02:48 PM)

No but you don't even know IF it is round or even has another dimension...but that is besides the point. What is important is at that time there was no other truth except the human perspective at that particular time. My whole point is not if this is true or that but that truth cannot be separated from mankind in the way you propose.

Truth at any one time is what humans make it not what it really is...as if we really know many absolutes of the universe anyway.

You see if humans don't recognize the absolute truth then what ever they believe right or not is the truth... who else do you propose know the truth if we don't know...whales perhaps?

And as I said truth will change over time according to our perceptions...many truths of the past were proven wrong and those same new truths will be changed again... but only to suit humans and our perception at that very day.

Kirata -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 2:06:00 PM)

All statements are dependent on context. Something may be absolutely true within a given context, yet false in a larger or different context. Therefore, the question is mal-formed because it doesn't provide a context. Instead, the respondent must imagine one in order to answer. And accordingly, in their respective contexts both answers are correct.

The only statement we can make independent of context is "I am."

MrBukani -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 2:43:53 PM)

I conceded my question has a fault in the sense its yours.
Still your truth is absolute to your perception, until proven wrong.
If aliens would arrive on earth and say yes, we have proven there is life after death.
Come and experience.
I would not be adamant, but fluid and follow the thread of eternity.
