DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON ANYONE

I'm wondering if people post controversial topics just to get attention, both good and bad.

Yes they do, in all forums I have ever posted on this happens. You can just read the title and say... "FLAME BAIT". Funny thing is this, it is often the ones that weren't posted to be controversial that end up this way...lol.

Would you rather discuss knitting tea-poseys?

I think so, at least to me the very nature of their posts seem to scream it. I think there is also a sadistic button pushing streak to some of it. I often envision them sitting there laughing in glee that so many people take the bait.

When I post controversial topics (if indeed I do, because I’m not real sure that I even do so), it’s usually because I’m looking for feedback to assist me in weighing a decision. If I’m weighing an issue in my head and I’ve thought it to death, I sometimes can’t see the forest through the trees, and I need input of people who can see the situation from the outside looking in. Sometimes their perspective is enough for me to step back from my own blankets of thought and look at the question I’m facing from a different angle. Sometimes others can offer options that hadn’t occurred to me, or answers I hadn’t thought of. I’m only one person with one opinion, so when I ask myself a question, I only get my own feedback. If I put that same question out to the masses, I can look forward to getting a bunch of different feedback from a bunch of different people, with a bunch of different perspectives. That widens the playing field for me and helps me to look at my question from outside my own little box.

IMO, IMHO, YMMV, AFAIK, to me, I see it as, from my perspective, it's been my experience, I only speak for myself, (and all other disclaimers here).

I would prefer to talk about knitting a quilt actually.

So WOT lol? We live in a media circus society, many want their five minutes of fame. Let's enjoy the superficial, the superfluous, the venal and the glitz. Let's tolerate the useless, the ignorant, the creepy craps. Let's have a bloody good laugh! Altogether, now...

Yup, pulled your nose and you squealed-fun fun fun!

Ever hear a sadist say they liked a maso who just laid there and took it with no reactions?

Yes, 100%, and god love em..... I find out more about the mental condition of my fellow boardies than in the threads I'd deem serious. Who is one step away from a mental break down.  LOL. Who tries to put on a reasonable facade, but breaks down under the tiniest provocation. Who always jumps in on the bandwagon (page 10 or so), and always joins the flamers, but never contributes anything constructive. Etc.....
The flame threads are good for getting to that kind of info, much better than a profile.

Probably, but not as many as some would like to believe.

I don't start that many threads, but when I have, I certainly have tried to make them both interesting enough and enough on the edge, that people will want to both read and respond.

Question back to you. Is attention seeking manifest in each post where the poster is hoping to both be read and get a response?

Proprietrix I have never seen anything you have typed as being what I took the OP to mean. I almost ALWAYS learn something from you.

Only in the Off Topic forums, and even then it's with an interesting point.

I love attention and I certainly know how to get it, and I know that some of my posts in other forums will definitely get some.  But that's not my purpose in posting.

Some people however, definitely post for the flames.

When the US and UK don't allow controversial discussion I will retire to Saudi Arabia. What is discussion without controversy?

I am sure they do. Many also post to get validation for something they have done or thought. That backfires many times.

How dare you suggest that everyone who makes a post is doing so for attention.  Couldnt you have worded that differently?  Did you have to use the words "good" and "bad"??    Why is it that no one can ever say something is "negative" instead of calling someone bad?

Sure...sure...I'll bet you're just "wondering".  What youre really trying to do is stir the shit up.

No matter what you typed , what you *really* meant to say is......

"Why do these boards have more than their fair share of people who post controversial topics".

bahahhahhaaaaaaaaaa I couldnt resist!

I am sure people do(Or think they do/try to).  But then what is a controversial thread?  Most are pretty normal and mundane really - I personally do not see the shock value.  But I think there is a more abundant amount of people who try to make a thread more controversial than it is or needs to be.  I think that is more noticable.

Seriously, even if something starts out as mundane, someone will stir it up sooner or later.
