For me, in no particular order:
-Vietnam-grew up watching it on TV nightly. Every kid on the block served. It was just assumed that when your time came, you would grow up and go to the Nam.
-The 60's revolutions. Yeah, that shit shaped me bigtime
-My parents divorce and fathers alcoholism. It's safe to say that those dual events sure altered my life
-The Anarchists Cookbook
-Hunter S, Garcia, Easy Rider
-Animal House

Frank Herbert's Dune and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Both taught me not to accept the world as I saw it but to look deeper for the hidden meanings and truths.

The Gor books. I have to admit the the Gor books colored my BDSM outlook.

I read anything I could get my hands on when I was a child. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, entire series of Nancy Drew books and Readers Digest books. Even mechanic manuals and pornos sitting on the back of the toilet, but I think the story of Helen Keller sticks out the most. Even at 6, I was impressed with her story and the obstacles she overcame.

If i'm honest, and I usually am, i'd have to say the 'Adult' movie my parents were watching at the drive in theater when I was very young. I guess they thought I was asleep. I have never really beena ble to look at spaghetti without flashign back to that movie. But, in case i can't say that, then I guess The Exorcist. Scared me straight and Old Yeller.

Grew up fearing Comunism/Russia and seeing them as the enemy, but my sister (7 years younger than me) goes to Daghestan as a missionary when she graduates High School and ends up marrying a half Russian/half Chechnyan. The world seems to have changed so much, and still so little, in my lifetime alone.

Oh maaaaan, Winnie, the Exorcist (when I was 15) scared me like nothing has, before or after. I don't even like thinking about it now.

When I glanced at your post, I read "Gor coloring book". That would be awesome. I remember seeing Gor novels for sale in my local supermarket when I was a kid. Apparently, no one running the joint bothered to read what they sold. I still kick myself for never picking them up.

Gorean coloring would be awesome!

Don't kick yourself too hard for not buying the Gor books off the shelf when you had the chance. I have done worse, far worse.

I started buying the Gor books when I was thirteen. My parents were clueless as to their content and the staff of Walden Books (anyone remember them?) either didn't know or didn't care.

By the time I was in my early twenties I had quite the large collection.

My early twenties was also a period in my life when several things went wrong all at once and I kind of went crazy for about six months... God crazy.

Yup, I invited Jesus into my heart and filled with the Holy Spirit I set out to get right with God by reading the Bible regularly and proclaiming his glory to everyone. Also, I set out to rid myself of several demonic influences in my life which, among other things, consisted of:

Pouring all my liquor (the devil's drink) down the drain.

Flushing all my marijuana (the devil's weed) down the toilet.

Burning all of my Gor books (the devil's manuscripts).

Yup, that's right. I started a fire in the fire pit in the back yard and one by one, sent those perverted, sin filled lust inducing, masturbation inspiring demon books to Hell!

After about six months I began to realize that God wasn't holding up his end of the bargain. Combined with an increasing realization that the Bible was self contradictory bullshit in service of a sadistic narcissistic god, this was enough to snap me back to reality.

I promptly went to my friend's house, apologized for being such a smug, self righteous jerk for the last six months, and told him I needed a joint and any porn magazines he could spare.

It wasn't until several years later that I realized that the Gor books were now selling on the internet for some nice sums of money.
