My grandfather grew up in a time when it was disgraceful to have Native American blood. He was scorned, ridiculed and beaten for that fact alone. When he had children, he made sure they were born at home, with only a midwife. That midwife was paid well to make the birth certificates out for "white". There are many "white" people in this country who are not "white". Some know and have no desire to change it. Some dont know. Some take years to trace down their heritages to make the changes.

My grandfather, and my dad, didnt allow us to use our "race" as a card. It wasnt a "get out of trouble free" card, we couldnt pull it out to excuse our behavior based upon centuries of abuse. In comparison to the black slaves, we didnt have it quite as bad, at least towards the end of slavery. Our enslavement was different in many ways.

I think if I saw a Native American on TV right now, complaining about his heritage and how he was abused by the "white man", I would cringe. It just isnt done. There was an activist among the tribe in NC, Eddie Hatcher, who took over a news staff at a paper in Lumberton. He made many I knew want to find a hole and crawl into it. Hatcher's way was violence. After the news paper incident, he was involved in a killing, a drive by shooting, and he went to prison. The news incident happened in 1990, he died in prison in 2009. He brought a spotlight to that area that was badly needed.

Operation Tarnished Badge netted 16 officers pleading guilty.

The investigation was rumored for over three years before the first arrests were announced in June, 2006. The grand jury indictment of the three deputies—C.T. Strickland, Roger Taylor and Steve Lovin—lists alleged crimes that occurred between 1995 and 2004. The charges include theft from programs that receive federal funding; racketeering; conspiracy to commit racketeering; and conspiracy to commit money laundering. In November 2006, two of the three deputies were charged with illegally programming satellite cards and selling them. Later charges against other deputies have included robbery, kidnapping, arson, assault, and drug trafficking. In October 2006, two deputies pled guilty to federal fraud charges for doing private work on Glenn Maynor's house and yard while on duty as deputies.

The investigation is a federal one, involving the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the United States Secret Service, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. It focuses on alleged federal crimes committed by deputies during the time when Maynor served as sheriff.

As of May 19, 2007, sixteen deputies had been charged in the investigation and all had pled guilty.

Is there a point to this post? Yes. For some to say what happened centuries ago has no bearing upon today.... This is the proof I give to you that it wasnt just centuries ago, that its still happening today, and that there are some people who need to open their eyes, and their ears, and quit hiding under rocks.

My heritage doesnt make me any better than anyone else.... NOR dos it make me any less.... it makes me... me. Racism is quite alive, well, living and breathing in our society today. Its not just against black people, its against all races that arent deemed "white".

Different races have different methods of expressing their anger and frustration. This post isnt in any way meant to demean the African American's method of handling their own form of racism. Its merely to point out that its happening to many different races, in many different ways.
