Admittedly, I belong to a strange group of people, i.e Rodeo riders. In my case, the "former rodeo rider because the number of broken bones exceeded the maximum number allowed for 4 sane individuals and I got too fucking old." class.

However, in rodeo you have clowns to distract the bull so the rider can get the hell out of the proximity of the bull in one piece.

But there is a stranger breed of people. A group that the mere thought of what they do makes me wonder about their sanity...

quote:

23 injured in Pamplona as bull run ends in a stampede by the revelers

PAMPLONA, Spain — The penultimate bull run of Spain’s San Fermin festival left at least 23 people injured Saturday, when thrill-seekers fleeing the beasts were crushed at the narrow entrance to the bullring, officials said. Two of the injuries were gorings.

As the huge animals thundered into the entrance of the tunnel, they were blocked by a mound of dozens of people who had fallen and were piled on top of one other.
and you people call me crazy

Hemingway. If it wasn't for him, there would be 10 or 20 locals and that's it. Now every drunk kid who ever read him decides to join in this.

as far as i'm concerned if you put an animal in a stressful situation for entertainment value then you deserve every injury you get. Golden stars for the bulls I say.

At the Calgary Stampede there was z cowboy stomped on by a bull few days ago. Somehow he didn't get injured nearly as badly as you would expect. There was a steer put down early last after it sustained as severe neck injury in the steer wrestling. And in the chuckwagon races, there was a 12 yr old thoroughbred outrider horse that just dropped dead after the race. A post mortem will be performed on him.

Me? !?!? Absolutely not Aries....just reporting some facts. I will admit to enjoying the competition of the chuckwagon races, but other than that I am not a huge fan of sports where either humans or animals lose their lives. A number of years ago a member of a very prominent local ranching family was paralyzed in a rodeo accident. It is very sad..

Please excuse me for chipping in after such an absence, but I have to admit to having a level of satisfaction when a human comes a cropper at the feet/horns/teeth of an animal placed in an un-natural and stressful situation.

Know what I mean?

Some people get a rush from running with the bulls, riding them and other things. I have been bucked off of horses when I was a kid and did not get a broken bone, just a nervous mom...

The guys who ride the bulls get my respect. Some of those animals can be mean! Growing up, I was wanting to be a stock contractor, a person who supplied the bulls for the sport.

You can get stampeded bringing cattle back from summer pastures. I'm just as happy my daughter did very limited cow work, mainly western all around and English flat classes.

But bull riders are hot. Crazy but hot.

I'm sure it is a rush... rodeos are a pathetic display of animal abuse masquerading as entertainment.
I'm not sure if I can even blame jeff for it, though I want to... environment and upbringing probably played a major role in making him (and the other people who participate in it), that way.

I'm just struggling to keep a level head, and not look down on you people to the degree I'm leaning towards...

I like barrel racing....girls ride horses. Broncs and bullriding....I dislike very much the idea of these animals having ropes tied around their bits to elicit the desired response. Face it...people don't go to the rodeo to watch cowboys stay on for 8 seconds, they go to watch the cowboys get tossed on their ass. But that doesn't mean I like to see anyone, animal or human, hurt. I live in the Canadian Prairies. While I live in the city, ranching is a way of live around here.

I can assure you Aries that we've never abused our horses. And the equine vet will attest to that. Last time I adopted a dog, we put down that vet as one of the references. Just knowing we had our horses at the top equine facility in the region was enough for them to waive home visits and follow up checks.

Let me explain something here. Most of the rough stock horses could not be broken, therefore there was just two things to be done, turn em into dog food or put em on the rodeo circuit.

Riders are no longer allowed to use sharp spurs, the ones used now have a blunt ball on them to prevent injury to the animal. The fees paid to the rough stock contractor pay for some of the best care that any animal gets. When the animal is too old to use, he is put out to pasture. For the animals they are getting a billion dollar retirement plan.

These animals are earning money for doing just what comes naturally, get that person off their back because there is no way in the world they are going to submit to a saddle.

i'm sorry jeff but a lot of what you have written there is about as true as saying that every racehorse gets put out to pasture on retirement. that as they have thousands spent on them, some earning hundreds of thousands that they get the best care. it's a load of crap. those rodeo animals are put through tremendous amounts of stress for money. most will be shot at the end of it not put out to pasture on retirement. just how old are these horses when they start, and for how many years do they have to perform, for how many days a year do they perform before they get to get to go out to pasture? and how many years does that last?

common sense tells you that that is unrealistic.

I agree with Aries, dog food would be the better option right from the start, and i'm as big a horse lover as you will ever find walking this planet.

ever been to a horse or cattle processor? Check one out before you say it is human.

My experience is with the rough stock contractors around here. Horses are put out, the maximum the contractors around here use a horse is about three years. So when they are taken off, they are six years. when I rode, most rough stock animals were well treated.

And if you think what they go through as a bare back bronc or saddle bronc, I must point out that most people who break horses break the animal's spirit, so they can be sold as a "children's" horse.

Unfortunately I can attest to Jeff being absolutely correct on that. My daughter's second horse had spent some months at a professional trainer. Three years later, when we bought him we discovered that he was terrified of damned near everything.

He had been made into a push button horse. He could do only certain things and if you asked him to learn anything new he had panic attacks. It took another three years before he began to recover his spirit.

Horse and rider need to be a partnership where if the rider's having a bad day, the horse will do it for them. And when the horse is having a bad day the rider will take more leadership. This horse never had any joy, it had been beaten out of him so that he would be a good children's horse.

We took great pride in telling the trainer who had done this to him to go to hell when they offered to buy him.

Intentionally or not, this bit was particularly condescending.

And this borders on a personal attack:
