Often people make comments....and sometimes go on long rants...and it's obvious that they never bothered to take the time to read the thread. They see some hot button word in the title and off they go. Then a bunch of other people will jump on their tirade bandwagon. If you can't take the time to read the thread and find out what is actually being asked or discussed....why comment?

Sometimes I reply to the OP before I read the rest of the thread. Usually I discover after I've read the rest of the thread that it's taken a tangent or that I'm just mirroring everyone else's sentiments. I do this because sometimes I want to respond before seeing the general consensus and from just my own position. I don't, however, just read the subject line and respond.

People often do not read, or they don't read carefully. I've misread and posted incorrectly a few times, but if I'm posting a very strong opinion or making a harsh comment, I made certain I've read the original post carefully before I do so.

Erin, I am like Miz Suz, I will sometimes comment before I read the rest of the thread, but it is because I am commenting on what I am reading, not that I don't intend to read the rest of it. For example, I sat and read 14 pages of the bbw thread before I actually commented. It just depends on whether someone has posted something that I feel like I want to comment on. I agree, sometimes it appears like some folks don't read the entire thread, but rather a few of the last pages and jump on it.

tl;dr. you're wrong mist. everybody always reads everything, takes a moment to understand it first, and then and only then posts. which is why long threads with many posts have so small chances of attracting more posts : everything reasonably related has been stated and everyone knows that and is happy.

What's worse are those that read the thread, and still go on long rants that have little to do with the thread.

I always read the OP but to be honest I dont always read the enteire thread aspecaily a 12 pg one!!! so I may repeat a point but I dont think I ever go off topic sott if I have

I agree with others who have said that sometimes they will respond to the original post without reading the thread. I suppose this is partly so that I give my own original response without influence of other replies. Sometimes it does seem prudent to see what others have said so that I can see where the discussion is now, rather than where it was when the question was asked. But not always....it depends, perhaps on the type of question. If the OP is asking 'What do you feel about this....' I don't necessarily need to know what other people feel to give my own reply. I know that this sometimes results in a 'me to' style post, but maybe the weight of numbers actually adds something to the thread. However, if the OP is asking 'Where do I buy a such-and-such...' it would be silly to give the same answer for the fifth time. Probably the ideal would be to draft a reply without looking at anyone else's replies and then redraft it having read the whole thread to include any necessary caveats. But that's extra work, right? And sometimes I'm lazy. Sometimes it would be easier to just say nothing at all.... Laura

I don't know about reading an entire thread - some people read the entire thread and still post about nothing to do with the OP. I think another question would be to people really stop to to think about whats being said on a thread (or OP) - rather than jump to their own concluesion. Peace and Rapture

Well, Mist, sometimes I want to reply to the OP, and quite honestly don't give a damn what anybody else might have said. Sometimes the thread is long and/or boring to read, and sometimes I am just to fucking lazy to read it all.[:)]

The best threads are those that provoke thought and intellectual exchange, those threads sometimes run for pages as the debaters question, quarrel and try to establish their reasoning to others.

guilty as charged (smile) I always read the thread before I comment. One never knows when a thread will take a turn and veer away from the OP... Sometimes I read an entire thread and realize I really have nothing to add that ten people have not said. Those are the times I try to exercise restraint and not post at all. Often it is difficult to discern exactly what the poster is asking... but there are some very bright folks here that ask enough questions to root out the real question. edited to hopefully repair a stuck key... damn cat, damn cat

I don't mind when a thread makes twists and turns...sometimes it even makes for a more interesting thread. But dang, we have a 20 page thread on the boards of people jumping in and berating a poster who actually LIKES BBW's for having the insensitivity to start a post about the number of BBW's.

It depends for me. If it's a new topic and I think I really might have something unique to post, I'll go ahead and zip off a reply without reading. SOmetimes I'll still read the thread just to see if it jogs any other thoughts or points out of me. It is funny/annoying to have someone make a point on page 3 of a post and then have someone else make the identical point on page 8- after the point's already been discussed and gone over. When a thread gets to 60 posts or beyond, it's definitely the right thing to read through the whole thread before replying. But it's the nature of the cyber beast.

I find that sometimes when people respond to the OP after the thread has been hijacked it often can turn the discussion back to the OP. If the person that responded to the thread had read through it they probably wouldnt have responded at all, therefore they actually got back on point. I find this helpful personally. I rarely find a thread that is over 6 pages long to be worth reading in its entirety, but then again I have forum ADD sometimes. People often say what I am thinking, but then again, people often don't. I try not to rehash an opinion... but like Arpig said, I don't care all that much..smiles. (As another thread said.. it is all about me...kidding here)

I'm one of those who reads the thread all the way through if I'm going to make a post, though I will sometimes draft my reply in advance or go back and respond to something someone had said on page 2 even if the thread is up to page 8 and beyond. If what I want to say has already been said I normally don't respond. I hate it when I read through the whole thing and most of the posts are repetitive. Nothing worse then beating a dead horse-dead horses don't scream :) [sm=crop.gif]

I have been guilty...~hanging head shamefully~ ...of then starting to read through a thread, finding a post that angers/irritates/is in complete agreement with me (this last is as they all should be, by the way) and then finding later that either that post-er has changed their mind or that I am just one of many " me too's". So, then I try to get to the point where I answer the OP, then read the thread, then go back and answer the latest post of someone. Sometimes, in doing that I will answer the OP and something else the person who made the OP states later. For example, you mention the BBW thread. I read through that entire thing and, as I stated in the "All About You?" thread regarding just the issue you mentioned...a guy asked a seemingly innocent, innocuous question and proceeded to be flamed in many, many posts. Human nature...tis a puzzlement sometimes.

I think you've been here long enough to see this same thread come by more than a few times. Seen enough people complain. On most threads the answer to the original persons question is never even touched upon. People cannot read. They just want to talk. It is the curse of message board's far and wide. Intellect is hard to find.
