She wants to be a paraplegic

quote:

Chloe Jennings-White suffers from a rare psychological condition known as Body Integrity Identity Disorder. An able-bodied 58-year-old woman, Jennings-White fantasizes about being a paraplegic and wants to undergo spinal surgery to make her legs stop working, The Sun reported.

I find this to be batshit crazy, but, as I thought about it, I wondered if those who see being born as the wrong gender as legitimate and should be fixed via surgery if the person so desires, would they agree that this woman has the right to the body she believes she is.

Forgive that horrid run on sentence, but I am rushing out to get my hair cut!

What say yall?

My guess is, she really wants to be on the public dole more than anything. In centuries past, people have purposely maimed themselves in order to be more believable beggars. Good luck on her finding a doctor willing to do that, though. There's this little thing called the Hippocratic Oath to overcome.

That link goes to a joke about penises - was that your intention?

Marc2b -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 11:26:03 AM)

BIID is quite real. I know a person who suffers from it. It is believed to be a result of the brain's internal map of its self not coverning the affected area. It is most certainly not the result of would be scammers looking to live on the public dole.

I seen this link- in a docu. She is a researcher who made some kind of discovery... so she has smarts.

On this goal tho- I think she is a nut.

There is the correct one............lawdy lawdy, so sorry about that. As you can see, she has found an overseas doctor to do the operation...

Nope Athena, it was not my intention, it was from rushing out the door to get a haircut and a pedicure!

I think it's safe to go with "batshit crazy".

V v interesting.

Sure, this does make my batshit-crazy-o-meter go off, but... but.... It's a long and difficult line... there are people who really get of on the kind of hardcore "edgeplay" stylee beating that could very well lead to paraplegia...

So... where do we draw the line.

I dated a girl once who had a HUGE boxing helena fantasy

She wan't batshit crazy but....

I have heard of people who have had parts of their body removed because they felt they shouldn't have them. Its a psychological disorder, and not easily treated - or understood!

The problem with this disorder is that if you remove (or disable) the offending bits, there really is no going back.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 2:50:28 PM)

I don't understand how any physician could help someone basically cripple them self.....some things are just not meant to be understood I guess, but this one really blows my mind.

pahunkboy -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 4:18:33 PM)

Why would anyone want a penis?

I think the gal is selfish. Imagine those who want to walk but cant.

I appreciate the concept of tolerance for individual quirks. But isn't there a point at which we can say

"DON'T BE A FUCKING IDIOT"

?

erieangel -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 4:39:01 PM)

I know a woman who has been diagnosed with a major mental illness at some point in her life, though I'm not sure if it was before or after her surgery...

Anyway, for years she'd been in and out of the doctors complaining of leg pain and an inability to walk more than a few yards. It was so bad that her calf was actually swelling at times. Though no doctor could find any cause for her discomfort, no amount of physical therapy or other treatments provided any relief. Finally, the leg was removed just below the knee. The woman was given and taught to walk on a prosthetic (which she rarely used). But she seemed far more content in her electronic wheel chair than she had been for years prior to her surgery.

I don't think that analogy holds up. If the reason she shouldn't do this is that others are subjected to this involuntarily then you could also pose that people looking for an M/s relationship are selfish because some others are involuntarily held into slavery.

The same thing applies to people looking for pain play, prison scenes, long term confinement, rape play, or cuckolding.

If we shouldn't desire things that other people are involuntarily subjected to in a way that causes them mental, emotional, and physical anguish, then most activities that fall under the BDSM umbrella are inherently wrong and selfish.

That being said, if she does choose to go through with this, I feel she can't make claim to special treatment either. No disability claims if she can't find (or keep) a job. Though luck if there are places she can't access because of lack of a wheelchair ramp. No special consideration on housing, parking, or any other disability benefits.

Her making use of those types of services, to the detriment of those who actually need them because of things outside of their own control, I would consider selfish.
But if she wants to play pretend at being disabled, even to the point of altering her body to the point where she physically can't use her legs, I see nothing wrong with that.

pahunkboy -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 5:19:11 PM)

yeah- but if someone is standing at the edge of a cliff threatening to jump- I dont push them.

littlewonder -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 7:42:12 PM)

what if they begged you to? What if it was their last wish because they are dying or in such chronic pain that they can't live another day?

Personally I don't think she's crazy. She simply has a disorder and if she has been treated for the disorder and a therapist feels that she would lead a much happier life by being a paraplegic then I say she should be allowed to do so.It's not harming anyone but herself and really, I wouldn't consider it harming but helping at that point.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 8:28:11 PM)

It's called apatomophila. It is an acute form of paraphilia that manifests itself by a desire to have limbs amputated.

What is paraphilia you ask? Pretty much any fetish qualifies.

However it does break the bonds of "Safe, Sane, Consensual." Mostly on the "Sane" part of that. Also a bit of the "Safe" part.

Batshit crazy gets my vote too.

njlauren -> RE: Woman feels she should be a paraplegic... (7/17/2013 8:51:23 PM)

It raises tough questions, because if the desire is that strong and cannot be treated/cured, and doing so would make them be more well adjusted, then why shouldn't they be allowed to do it? I am not saying it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, but there are people who argue the same thing about SRS surgery for trans people, that it is mutilating a healthy body, that it is not needed, and yet to people who are trans it literally can be a matter of life and death. I doubt she is doing this to get on the dole or disability, I suspect it is some deep seated need....

I think it is why it should be in the hands of experts to decide what to do, because it is so fraught with emotion. Like I said, knowing more then a bit about the trans world, there were a lot of people arguing that SRS should not be allowed, whether it was against God's master plan or they felt there was no need for it or because it squicked them out, but as someone once said, to understand sometimes you have to put yourself into the person's shoes to try and understand it. There are people where amputee-ism is a fetish, but from what little I know of people like her, this isn't a fetish, it is what they really feel.
