ETA. I'm truly surprised that a Language pathologist wouldn't realize that there is no "Tennessee accent" per se.
There are actually 3 accents commonly encountered in the state.
1. The Appalachian which is most commonly encountered in the area that runs down the eastern border from Mountain City to Chattanooga and basically east of Oak Ridge.

2. The Delta which is most common in the SW corner of the state centered on Memphis.

3. The basic drawl which is encountered in the rest of the state with the exception of Nashville.

Nashville is a special case as I don't think anyone who presently lives there was actually born there so it's a hodgepodge.

Two thoughts on southern accents:

(a) When Jimmy Carter took office, Sen. Howard Baker remarked how nice it was finally to have a President without an accent.

(b) As an exchange student in England, I once observed to a British friend that that the English were far more biased about accents than we Americans are. He cocked an eyebrow and asked, "Oh really? And how seriously do you take a speaker with a thick drawl?" Must admit that shut me up.

But...I want to know how you really feel.

Squeaky, high-pitched voices annoy me more than anything (regardless of accent).
I have an in-law with an incredibly annoying squeak that I have to leave the room sometimes to take a break.

It's been my experience, that if your family was here in the 1600's, you're pretty much related to every other family that was here at that time. So, it's not far fetched.

Even 3000 miles away, I was at a charity event and met a woman with a similar heritage as mine and it turns out our families were linked.

For me it's more about what people say than about their accent, no matter what accent a girl has it's turn of if the words coming out of her mouth is shit.
