ORIGINAL: pahunkboy When is UK/EU finally going to thank the US for bailing yous out 2x from Soviets/Germans. When you Americans start reading history texts besides Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos. I've never read Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos, but I've seen every episode of Hogan's Heroes. [;)] Still, I've read other history texts too. I don't think Americans have any different sets of facts than you do, but the conclusions and interpretations might be different. We just see it from a different point of view, even if we may be looking at the same things in the same picture. Much of history is indeed a matter of interpretation, as you say. I have no argument with that. My issue is more with the small minority of Americans that Green Day once sang about: those who don't so much have different sets of facts, or interpretations of the same facts, but rather have no facts at all. Some of that ilk on here seem to be actively allergic to facts. Likewise, perhaps freedom itself may be subject to interpretation, which is what others have alluded to regarding the topic of this thread. Sometimes, though, in comparative threads like this, whether it's who is more free (or who won WW2), they seem to become more like sports rivals razzing the other team, characterized by light-hearted ribbing and jibes mainly to get someone's goat in the context of a friendly rivalry. Still, I don't think it's a matter of having no facts at all, but rather, a certain selective set of facts, which I've seen all parties guilty of at one point or another. Even the small minority of Americans you speak of has some facts. After all, we know that American troops were sent to the UK and Europe during the World Wars, since many of us have relatives who can attest to that. They can't all be lying, so at least we can be certain of that one fact, if nothing else. So, with all due respect to yourself and Green Day, it's a mistake to say that they have "no facts."
