There wasnt much point making a book on who would use this story as a tool to bash multiculturalism in general.

The "rapist" got 13 months for extramarital sex and illegal alcohol consumption.

She got 16 months for extramarital sex, illegal alcohol consumption and perjury.

How was her sentencing broken down? Is the typical perjury sentence 3 months? What was her proof that she was raped? Would it have been proven in Norway's courts? What part of the sentencing is for illegal alcohol consumption?

Too many question marks to really make clear decisions on this, imo.

A bit scarey for her I am sure.

.....but an example of how good it is "To respect others laws, when you are in their house" so to speak.

here is another article where people are condammned 3 months in jail for perjury in the uae so I think it's the common sentence, I don't know what is the sentence for alchool consumption but I read in another article one got 1 year for alchool and robbery, so or robbery has a very light penance or alchool consumpion is around a month and extramarital sex one year, if you are arab is 80 lashes.
for what I read in the article her proof where her statement and her medical examination, that I suppose in norway like in italy would lead to an investigation, but in the uae as I read in the article the only possible proof of rape is an adult material witness that can confirm the act or the confession of the defendant, whatever happens in a locked room is between consenting adults, so as sex was proved but not raping they where both convicted for extramarital sex.

edit: here is an article that says a girl was sentenced to 1 year for extramarital sex, and being alone with one or more men means consenting to sex with them in uae.

Actually, I would've said, "how good it is to make some study of those laws before agreeing to obey them." I honestly cannot imagine why any non-muslim female would willingly go to such a place. Presumably, if you are of the culture then these rules seem fair and reasonable to you. They very certainly would not seem fair and reasonable to... say... Carol.

How is this relevant to the person in the story, who awoke to find a co-worker raping her?

OK, I have a serious question and this is not meant to be sarcastic or anything else...

How did she end up in that country to start with? I'm sort of curious if any women on this forum would travel to a muslim country without a very, very, very careful look at both the written laws and the practical implementation of those laws. I get it that not all of the muslim countries are the same but I'd make damned sure I knew what I was getting into before travelling there.

I've often wondered why any businesswoman would ever agree to go to such a place. Hell, I won't even go to the US because of restricted freedoms there. Being a female and going to Dubai just seems insanity. So any insights into thought processes?

she had a good job opportunity and was naive about what could have happen to her, thinking that avoiding certian situation was enought and not that she could be force to do things and had better shut up, as you can see from her behaviour she didn't know when she happened to be alone with a man he would own her, i think people from the hotel tried to warn her when they "questioned her if she wanted to inform police".

Wow... that is amazing to me that anyone could be so arrogant and naive. People really don't get this concept of "different country" at all? I feel for her... and I think she is negligent in terms of protecting herself and I have some questions about her own government (where were the travel advisories?). Well, now she can help tell other women what should have been blindingly obvious all along... women are still property in much of the world. Be careful where you go.

I'm going to type this really, really slowly and maybe it'll help.

You.

Don't.

Get.

It.

But here, lemme help. Multiculturalism is a good thing. Being a narrow-minded parochial asshat is a bad thing. Raping women is also a bad thing.

Did that sort it out for you?

Jeffbc, now "multi-culturalism" is a..."good" thing?
Who told you that? College professor perhaps?
So,...western countries are expected to "yield" to other cultures and we're supposed to like that? That's a "good" thing?
Funny thing though, all those differant ..."cultures" *always* seem to want to come to *western countries* don't they oh, and impose their *cultures* on us.
They want The West to be "multi-cultural" but *THEY* don't want to be "multi-cultural."
Saying that "multi-culturalism" is a "good" thing is like saying that "political correctness" is a good thing when we know that p.c. is an evil thing.

Oh good lord. What? Did you just get done listening to Rush and there's still foam flecks around your mouth?

Look. Understanding actual reality is a good thing. Understanding different viewpoints is a good thing. Understanding that when you're looking across a cultural divide you need to be very careful is a good thing. Being parochial in one's viewpoint only limits yourself and your ability to be effective in the world.

quote:

Funny thing though, all those differant ..."cultures" *always* seem to want to come to *western countries* don't they oh, and impose their *cultures* on us.

How odd. Who, exactly, is "imposing their culture on ours"? I'm trying to figure out how that even works given the balance of power in the world today. You do realize, right, that we are the ones imposing ourselves on the entire rest of the world. That's why we need to spend so much on our "defense".

quote:

They want The West to be "multi-cultural" but *THEY* don't want to be "multi-cultural."

And I have I anywhere said that I care about "what they want"? No, I have not. What I have said is that I think engaging with actual reality on it's own terms is a good thing. I'm sure there are some muslims somewhere in the US who would like to implement Sharia law. Trust me. I'm not on their friends list. I'm also not very worried about them since they won't succeed. What made you so afraid?

Here though, lest you think I'm a bleeding heart let me tell you this. If some ME country made a formal declaration of Jihad with the intent to impose Muslim believes on the US I would be absolutely supportive of nuking them to glass without even a second thought then going on about my business. I don't feel any particular compunction to bend just because they might want me to. I just don't see that actually happening. The closest I can name is Afghanistan and "nuke them to glass" was exactly my reaction. I was never clear why we imperiled even a single American life on that little excursion.

quote:

Saying that "multi-culturalism" is a "good" thing is like saying that "political correctness" is a good thing when we know that p.c. is an evil thing.

No, we don't all know that. Some of us are grown up adults and understand the nuances of political correctness both in it's positive aspects and it's negative ones.
