All I can say is I wish I'd done it sooner. Met some really nice people and also came home with a number from a nice lady. This I wasn't expecting at all :-)

To anyone wondering or plucking up the courage to go to a munch, just do it.

love j

Congrats! I still haven't worked up the wherewithal to go to one myself all alone!

jola37 -> RE: Just been to my first munch (7/28/2013 4:34:28 AM)

hehe thanks everyone, just woke up this morning with a big silly smile on me face.

Go for it Enobaria, in your own time of course, but go for it if you've been thinking about it :-) I'm a bit of a research head on these things and I picked the munch carefully, looking at some of the profiles of the attendees as well, so you end up knowing who you're going to see a bit in the first place. This defo made it easier :-)

Best moment for me was talking to another male subbie who wouldn't tell anyone of his kinks., managed to get him to blurt it out and no one batted any eyelid, much to his joy!!

I wouldn't have gone had it not been for being on here and reading so many posts from the people here, it gave me that extra bit of confidence. Made me realise I wasn't going to end up being tied up and thrown in a boiling cauldron with carrots and onions :P

My experiences with munches is that they suck. A bunch of very nice but socially dysfunctional people eating a lot of food and tipping poorly.

Congrats, Jola! May this be the start of a wonderful new adventure.

No time like the present. If you wait until you've got somebody to accompany you, you might wait the rest of your life. If you go to one unaccompanied, you might find company for your next event.

I wonder how the munch experience would be if they were sometimes held at a higher end establishment with a dress code and people were required to pay for a set menu including tip. It would weed out some people who had issues with hygiene (a problem I've seen and heard about at munches) and make a more positive experience. You can also rent a private room.

It's debatable whether they'd weed out people with hygiene issues. They do weed out people with budget issues. There's a monthly munch here in Albuquerque held in a buffet restaurant, the vast majority of whose food is too salty for my diet. Paying the admission price for food I can't eat kind of rules it out for me.

Lost his cherry and scored the same night.
You go, my man.

awwbummer -> RE: Just been to my first munch (7/31/2013 9:35:44 PM)

That's great, I'm glad it went well. I met some really nice people at my first one. I was nervous about going as well, doubly so in fact because I had social anxiety at the time. I made a post saying I was coming to my first one and was a bit nervous. Two women emailed me and offered to meet me and introduce me around. And an older guy, a sort of veteran in the scene, and a consummate gentleman who has sadly since passed away, made a point of coming over and introducing himself which he does to all new people. And his sub kept an eye on me as well, and she was super nice. I met a great couple who sort of took me under their wings.

I don't know if anyone else has found this, but I definitely found the older people more welcoming. The younger ones, in their twenties, just sat around a table together and ignored everyone else, which didn't impress me. But that was the only thing.

I'd planned to just stay for an hour or so and ended up staying for like three, which was a big deal for me.

One of the ladies who contacted me initially and offered to look out for me kept in contact with me via email and we ended up going out a few times. She was a great lady. It didn't go anywhere and I always regret that but all in all it was a good experience.

I stopped going to them because I didn't really get as much out of the subsequent ones, but I hope that's different for you.

Did you call the lady you met? If you did how did it go?

To be of use, even unwittingly, is nice, thank you :-)

I wanted to start a thread saying thanks to so many people here for their often lengthy posts which contain lifetime's of experience. I have probably learnt more here in the last 3-4 weeks than in the last 5 years and for this I'm really really grateful. I hope in the future that I will have stuff to say that will have a positive impact on people. One thing's for sure, I feel comfortable here.

myotherself -> RE: Just been to my first munch (8/1/2013 11:02:43 AM)

I remember my first munch. I'd met up with one of the organisers for coffee a week or so beforehand so at least I had someone to talk to when I got there. I'm so glad I went - I met some awesome people who I now count as friends nearly a decade later [:D]

My experiences with munches are the same as petitespot's. There have been munches in areas I've lived where they tried the upper scale type places and such.....very few people would show up.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Just been to my first munch (8/1/2013 7:13:08 PM)

Sounds like it was good group at your munch. Way to go! Hope you are further inspired to attend a big leather convention. Those are a lot of fun too and the workshops are great.

Best wishes.

Last munch I went to was in a supermarket cafe, I kid you not. I spent less that ten bucks, and that included lottery tickets. Attendance isn't a problem if you have a decent location. Extra added bonus: it was in my old neighborhood growing up. Double comfort points there.
