Clear Channel--the largest owner of AM and FM radio stations, including the ones that carry Rush Limbaugh's show--just booted ads for a women's health care clinic in Kansas, calling them "indecent" and "divisive."1

What's indecent? Absolutely nothing--these ads are straightforward promotions of available health care for women. But apparently Clear Channel decided declaring that your clinic offers "highly qualified gynecologists" and "trusts women to make the best decisions for themselves" is too divisive. (see transcript below)

Their claims are ridiculous--and dangerous.

We cannot let a media corporation get between a woman and her right to critical health information. This story is starting to get attention in online media, including Jezebel, DailyKos, and the Huffington Post.2 If thousands of us speak out quickly, we can help generate a national media firestorm and Clear Channel will be forced to respond. Will you sign the petition telling Clear Channel to put South Wind Women’s Center's ads back on the air and stop blocking Kansas women’s access to health care information?

Tell Clear Channel that ads for women's health clinics aren't indecent or divisive.

Here’s what Clear Channel found so divisive:

quote:

At South Wind Women’s Center, our physicians are committed to providing quality reproductive health care in Wichita. Each physician is board-certified in family medicine or obstetrics and gynecology. Between them, they have over 50 years of experience and dedication, ensuring women are able to ensure the care they need when they need it.3

And

quote:

South Wind Women’s Center was founded to reestablish full access to reproductive health care. The center provides high-quality medical care and trusts women to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. South Wind Women’s Center: entrusting women with their own medical decision-making.4

The radio industry is still recovering from the fallout after hundreds of advertisers dropped Rush Limbaugh's show when he attacked Sandra Fluke for testifying before Congress about birth control.5 And radio industry insiders know another high profile fight about their meddling with women's personal decisions isn't going to go over well.

If enough of us speak out, we can send a strong message to Clear Channel, and others: Media corporations have no business getting between a woman and her right to critical health information.

Tell Clear Channel to stop blocking women from reproductive health care information.

Tell Clear Channel that Women's Health Care isn't "Indecent."

...UPDATE 7/26: Wichita’s Clear Channel General Manager Rob Burton gave this statement to a reporter yesterday:

As members of the Wichita community, KZSN has a responsibility to use our best judgment to ensure that advertising topics and content are as non-divisive as possible for our local audience.

Call (316-494-6601) and email him today to ask him why advertising a sex shop in a conservative Christian town is less divisive than refusing to let women find out where they can get health care, including cancer screenings and maternity care. Tell him that NOT running the ads is far more divisive than running them.

__

Recently, South Wind Women’s Center – the clinic founded in the wake of the murder of Dr. Tiller to reestablish access to full-spectrum reproductive healthcare, including abortion care, in Wichita, KS – tried to run ads for their services on several Clear Channel radio stations. But Clear Channel has booted them off the air for violating ”decency standards,” even though the same Clear Channel stations happily run ads for the local “adult boutique” and “male enhancement” products.

You can listen to SWWC’s radio ads here and here. And read our full press release on the issue here.

Women’s health care is never indecent, and everyone has the right to know where they can get medical care. The Clear Channel ban sets a terrible precedent in which private corporations can restrict women’s access to possibly life-saving information, just to please a small minority of vocal extremists. If we let this stand in Wichita, what city will be next?

Tell Clear Channel that you’ll #changethechannel unless they start running South Wind’s ads. It’s as easy as:

1) Sign SWWC's petition to Clear Channel calling on them to run the ads and stop blocking women’s access to health care information.

2) Contact Clear Channel to tell them you’ll #changethechannel unless they agree to run SWWC’s ads.

Pick your favorite communication method!

Look, if advertisers do not want to advertise on someone's show because of the content, then that show should have the same right to not take their advertising when they do not like their content.

If you applauded the one then you should applaud the other. It all comes down to choice.

It seems some only feel you should have a choice and long as they agree with it. Frankly it is none of my business what advertising they decide to run.

My objection is to the hypocrisy of dropping the women's health clinic due to "decency standards" while allowing ads for penis enlargement pills and a local sex shop.

Actually, the choice the listener has is simple, keep tuning to the station or stations or don't. If enough people chose to tune to a different station other than those owned by Clear Channel, then they might change their tune and policy.

Now unless clear channel has armed personnel running around forcing people at gunpoint to listen to their stations, I have to ask, what the fuck is the problem?

With free internet streaming media like pandora, and since most car stereos have an aux input in the front for mp3 players or cell phones, not to mention satellite radio services...

Could someone explain why there are no alternatives to clear channel stations?

Radio stations make money by advertising, advertising is based on listeners, the more listeners the more money the station makes. Less listeners, the lower the market share, the lower the advertising revenue. And the only stuff I know about radio I learned watching WKRP on tv, and at the age I watched WKRP I was more interested in the scenes with Loni Anderson than anything else. Hell the only reason I watched Dukes of Hazard was for the car and daisy.

Exactly. Those adds are not indecent and saying they are insults the intelligence.

Neither do I, never said I did. I was referring to a statement someone else made. I thought that was clear.

I read it as he was saying the women's clinic ad was indecent and the others were not, and hoping that he was being sarcastic.

The OP indicated the indecent ads were the women's ads.

I know what the op said, I was responding to the statement that the other ads were not indecent, or that none of the ads, from woman's clinics to the sex shop and penis enlargement pills were indecent, hence my statement that I hoped he was being sarcastic.

I mean people complain when I get long winded, and then when I post something that I feel is short and clear to the point, they get upset.

Look tazzy, at this rate, when I take over the world, you are going to find yourself as a meter maid in death valley, wearing six layers of wool from head to toe.
