Well, that could be interesting. It's easy to unite a hungry, angry country if you demonize a certain minority or two, but once you're in, you have to play by your own rules. The Kremlin will not do anything to LGBT tourists and athletes, and the angry, hungry, homophobic horde will see that as weakness and pandering to the West. It's quite possible that the anti-gay movement will detach itself from its sponsors and go rogue. (In a way, it's somewhat like the Tea Party abandoning the Republican Party that created it due to ideological differences.)

Yeah, I'm not seeing the benefit to the Russians by actually following through on that threat and arresting Olympic competitors from other countries.

If the IOC doesn't grow a pair over that, they're worse than useless.

I hope Snowden likes girls because it looks like he icht bein Moscower.

One thing, I'll bet in a few years we hear from the guy and he says he would never move from Russia. The place is progressive (except for a few things) and the people are cool, and he has a job no doubt.

The thing is folks, Russia is not as bad as they say. Sure there is a gangster government. If you know how to deal with them people you will be fine. In the US there is no dealing with them people. I would prefer Russia.

The only reason I don't go there or any other country is that I would lose my edge. People are so stooopid here I seem like a God or some shit becasue I can fix shit. On that other side of the world, regular people fix their own shit all the time.

Not that I am not a cut above, but all my easy gravy work would be gone ! Fuck all that.

It is not good they take this stance. Eventually just like anywhere else the oppressed will eventually get it done. But we cannot do it by remote control like in some countries. The would KILL us. Understand this, we CANNOT win a war with Russia. Don't get me wrong, they wouldn't really win either, but we would be just as much a loser.

If you are Gay, do not go to Russia. Boycott the Olympics if you want. Whatever. What, do you want Obama to send in some drones ? Even he or Bush would even think of it.

Great suggestion. There are other ways of letting homophobes know just how objectionable this situation is. One option is to decline to purchase any Russian vodka. Chatter on the net suggests that many are already doing this. There are other vodkas on the market for those who are unable to survive without their shots of Stoli or whatever.

So support the unofficial boycott of Russian vodka and get your kicks and chasers elsewhere!

I let this go a while to see if anyone caught on. Russia is not snooping in your emails to see if you are talking dirty to one of the same sex. Russia is not spying on your bedroom antics with wide range spectroscopic cameras from satellites. Russia is not going door to door if you search for the wrong things on the internet.

There really IS NO LAW against homosexuality in Russia.

THE LAW IS AGAINST PROMOTING HOMESEXUALITY.

Now compare that to certain states in which people can be arrested for carnal knowledge by "mouth or anus", and you tell me who has the problem.

Termy, you seem to believe that there is no major issue with homophobia in Russia. This is far from the case.

These vicious thugs are so sure of themselves that they post these videos on the Internet. They don't feel any need to disguise themselves, to sanitise their barbaric activities or fear arrest. That these thugs remain unarrested, or facing any State sanction indicates that homphobic violence is viewed favourably by the Russian State.

This violence is just one aspect of the horrifying hatred incited by and supported by the authorities there. And please don't be fooled by the law prohibiting 'promoting homosexuality'. The target of those laws is queer existence - Russian gays lesbians and other queers are facing a State organised and supported full on assault on their rights liberties and lives. Every week it seems there is another gay hate murder.

The situation there is indefensible and intolerable.

it is kind of funny this happens at the same time Snowden is there.

Russia changed their TOS. I dont know what the answer is- could even be a ploy to boost viewers. These days you never know.

Personally if I were running a country and they wanted the games there I would tell them to go elsewhere, it is more trouble than it is worth.

Quite a lot (if not all) of that was due to the Brits screwing up the logistics: they gave away too many tickets to VIPs who never showed up; their site was plagued with glitches and wouldn't let people buy tickets; a lot of people couldn't even buy tickets at the gates when it was clear the stadium was half-empty. Just goes to show you that no matter how big the bureaucracy, it'll still screw up, even if it has years to prepare for a 17-day event...

The more interesting question to me is "Where will olympic TV viewers go?" I can't imagine myself watching the olympics if the IOC doesn't do something here.

I suspect strongly depressed viewer numbers would make the point quite strongly.

Sure, because Republicans are really "Pro Gay" rights? The history of the Republican Party has proven their anti-gay stance time and time again. Maybe a few "Moderate Republicans" in a few Liberal states may support Gay Rights but the rest of the Republican Party might as well go move to Russia, where they can feel right at home in Putins "Anti Gay" Russia. Who knows, maybe Republicans can move there and run for office in Russia on a anti-gay platform. I could just see a Teabagger as the new PM there.
