Inspired by Pamplona, Great Bull Run coming to US; organizers say events will be safe

ATLANTA — Organizers of a new event planned for several U.S. cities plan to unleash bulls to sprint through fenced-in courses as daredevils try to avoid being trampled.

The Great Bull Run is inspired by the annual running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. It’s set to kick off Aug. 24 at a drag-racing strip south of Richmond, Va. A second event is planned for Oct. 19 at an Atlanta-area horse park that hosted events for the 1996 Olympics. More events are planned later for Texas, Florida, California, Minnesota, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

A few problems with this idea.

1) It is not done on a race track or fenced in enclosure, it is done on city streets.
2) Considering the obesity problem in the states, they gonna have to get some real slow bulls.
3) City folks would go batshit crazy if a bull shit on their streets. It would make the normal litter look bad.
4) Most city folks dont know the difference between a bull, steer or cow for that matter.
5) The Animal rights folks would get upset about how goring people hurt the bull's horns, and trampling people bad for their feet.

No actually the "animal rights people" are upset when another barbaric tradition like this is carried out using animals for entertainment or commodities and rodeos, fairs, circuses, etc., all suck. If you think that the only harm done to bulls is hurting their horns goring people you either don't care or don't know. I hope you were just being facetious.

You dont eat meat I take it?

The rest deleted cause I really dont want to get in a debate. Suffice it to say, this is a stupid idea for many reasons.

#1 = More eyeballs on the action.
#2 = Weeds out the weaklings.
#3 = City folks can get bent-the mayor's already cashed the check from the producers.
#4 = Consider this a teachable moment.

Remind me not to mention this to my daughter. In a certain mood, she'd go for it.

But signed waivers aside, all I can see from this is a field day for lawyers. People will get hurt and they will sue.

I guess there's something symbolic about it. You know how they say "We're bullish on America"? That sort of thing.

Although, I'm just not sure how much more bull we can take.

jlf1961 -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/3/2013 2:11:29 PM)

After some thinking, I have an idea.

1) we swap out cougars for bulls
2) since they want to do it in an enclosed area, make the fences higher.
3) The only eligible participants are career politicians, of ALL parties.

Winterapple -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/3/2013 2:57:53 PM)

FR
I want no part of anything inspired by the running
of the bulls. And I would encourage anyone who
doesn't know the full story of what goes on during the
running of the bulls in Pamplona to look into it.
Learn about what happens to those terrified animals
before and after the great run. Spain is a beautiful
country with a beautiful culture but it has one of the
worst if not the worst animal rights records in Europe.
There's nothing romantic or fun about the running of
the bulls. It's a travesty.

jlf1961 -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/3/2013 3:28:11 PM)

First, having worked cattle ranches as a teenager and occasionally after I left the army I know a few things.

1) Cattle of either sex do not run unless there is a damn good reason, they barely get up to a kind of trot when you put feed out in troughs. So the bulls have to have a reason to run, and it is not something that is pleasant.

2) The American prairies are covered with the graves of cowboys killed in stampedes. Some marked, most not. So getting in front of terrified bulls is about as dumb as putting a milk bucket under the same bull.

Finally, I did suggest a few changes that would make things better for Americans.

Yachtie -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/3/2013 3:34:16 PM)

There's so much bullshit in this country a few more won't be noticed. Perhaps the runners should "stand their ground"? [8D]

No meat no dairy no leather no products tested on animals. Yes I live in the real world so I understand I drive a car, I use a computer etc. Do the least harm. But in answer to your questions, I rescue bunnies from abusive situations and also meat auctions I currently have ten, and they took me from vegetarian to vegan, and these fucked up things like rodeos and bull running make me livid. Currently embroiled in legal battles with some filthy underground crush video people and I'd like to gouge their eyes out with my 5 inch heels. Also attempting with several other AR people to make it illegal to give away or promote animals as prizes at county fairs, with some moderate success actually. I don't like people that fuck with animals if you hadn't gathered. I'm friends on facebook with a lot of people here, they are probably sick of my stuff in their newsfeed but they can vouch, I'm for real.

Fuck that. How about apathetic animal abusers get bent? Animal rights activists have stopped plenty of events after the check has been cashed. A huge runway show scheduled just recently in the LA fashion district for one. Major celebrity pressure on that one shut it down. It is NOT a bull's job to weed out the weaklings in society, they do a pretty good job themselves. Oh and I am from a town in Maine of about 700 people, grew up hunting and fishing with my military Dad, why is it that all pro animal killers assume AR people are "city folk"? I'll ponder that today as I drive around in my 4wd on the back roads taking pictures. smh. Leave the fucking animals alone.

FR~

I have seen the Pamplona bull run a couple of times for real.

It's not nice, not pretty, and I didn't see anything "entertaining" in it at all.
I just don't understand people that find this sort of shit funny or amusing or even remotely worth watching.

"Sadistic bastards" is the only phrase I can think of.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/4/2013 9:13:19 AM)

A major step in the wrong direction.

Mindless mayhem, blood and terror as entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I could get behind this. IF the daredevils mentioned turned out to be the folks who came up with the idea, and the folks who helped set things up.

Bottom line, I expect intervention.

Lucylastic -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/4/2013 9:20:26 AM)

FR......Stupid people and stupid ideas just to amuse themselves with animals who have no freakin choice in the madness.
Idiocy doesn't need much of a push, Stupidity and wilful ignorance should be PAINFUL

jlf1961 -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/4/2013 9:32:02 AM)

You know, I started the thread because I find it funny that Americans want to do bull runs in various states, and in the process "Americanize" it.

It was not my intent to start another "animal rights" debate, but to point out the foolishness of such a move, not to mention that the risk to the "runners" is high, and the American people want to add one more sport in which people can buy tickets to watch an event in which there is a high possibility of people getting killed and maimed.

It shows the degeneration of the American culture is in some ways following that of Rome, we are adding blood sports to the entertainment. Yes I made jokes, but this move is so stupid that someone had to joke about it.

At this point I am getting leery of posting any topic related to animals, since someone would probably find a problem with teaching a pup not to chew electrical cords or playing tug with that pup.

For the record, I am against dog fighting, zoos with small, unnatural enclosures for animals, animal testing for drugs and hygiene products (the damn stuff is meant for humans, test it on humans) and trained predatory cats in circuses.

I think trophy hunting should be outlawed.

I eat meat, enjoy eating meat and I have a biological defense for anyone that says I shouldnt. Humans are omnivores. Yes we have the teeth to bite off chunks of vegetables, but I have not seen a horse, cow, buffalo, deer, antelope or any other herbivore with canines. In other words, we were meant to have meat in our diet. Maybe I eat too much meat, since my cholesterol is a little high, but I really dont care. My favorite meal is a blood rare steak, salad and baked potato.

But my point in this was and remains the simple fact that some entrepreneurs want to stage more sports where people can get killed. People go to car races just because there is a chance to see a massive wreck. At this point we might as well build huge arenas in every major city and instead of putting criminals in prison, have them fight against each other or against deadly animals.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Leave it to the Americans (8/4/2013 12:03:07 PM)

Calm down, it was a snarky response, no more that that. And I'm not backpedalling, either on what I said. If some hot-shot producer walked up to a mayor of some troubled city and offered up a wad of cash, they'd take it and spin the downsides just enough to have their way. That's why they're politicians.

The idea itself is ludicrous, unless there's a certified shit-ton of money involved, and I doubt any company or promoter is gonna pony up that level of lucre just to have a storm of controversy around their product. "But"...we live in a capitalist society, and if they did calculate the rewards outweighed the risks, it would come to pass. I agree it would be both stupid and shameful, but a lot of things in life are.

Kudos to your efforts, if it makes you feel good do it. There's a big difference in a town of 700 and a city of 70,000+, and if the mayor of that burg thought it would put some cash in their coffers without major collateral damage to their careers, it'd be a done deal.

Texas is different, the first big industry in the state was cattle.
