A long time back, a man with a certain wisdom shared a story with Me. I would like to share it with you.
A man came to his adviser to speak with him about a hatred he carried in his heart. He ranted and raved to the adviser, but it brought him no solace.
The adviser said to the man, "I want you to carry this potato. Everywhere you go, you must take it with you. Every time that you think of the hatred in your heart, you must touch this potato that you carry with you. Carry it until such a time that your hatred leaves you."
With this instruction, the man took the potato and wandered off. The potato was light to carry and wasn't really a burden.
Time passed and the potato began to rot. The man hadn't cared about the potato at first. It was not heavy, nor was it cumbersome.
But as each day passed, the potato became more and more decayed. It became black and rotten on the inside. It festered like a deep wound and could not be healed.
The man went back to the adviser and begged of him to be allowed to let the potato go. He could no longer stand what the potato had become. The stench of the rot followed him with every step.
In this, the adviser told the man, "this is what a resentment represents. In the beginning, it is light, and barely a burden. However, the longer you carry it with you, it will change. It will rot. It will become black inside. It will fester and never be what it once was. This will be your burden that only you can rid yourself of and be free."
And with this, the man let down the rotten potato and was burdened no more.
