We have a 2 part- idea- one is to get more folks registered. Once that happens- then we want to push absentee.

The trouble is people want the incumbent out- but they do not show up that day- and then they are like- too bad.

I want to hear your ideas- even silly ones- which is why I placed the thread here rather then pols.

Maybe I could get an ice cream truck to hand out voter reg forms. There are 20 kids on my block.

Believe me- people want this mayor out. His following tho is sizable and they sued to keep us off the ballot.

I really need your help on this one.

The mayor wants a 23 acre frack dump- right on the river- said river tax payers just spent millions $ to fix it up- and bill us as a fishing, boating, camping destination. We also just built an amphitheater on the river.

Population is 10,000. A no name ran in the primary and got close to 40% of the vote. We are running a guy with name recognition- who knows the city- for over 30 years. If Joe cant win- no one could ever.

The local newspaper is owned by Ganette- said corporation has ties to the fracking industry- the corruption goes clear up the the governor.

If you could find concrete proof of that, you might have a shot, otherwise, small-town politics is roughly akin to the perennially popular people in high school always winning class president, prom royalty, etc, etc. And it has to be bullet-proof, not supposition or conjecture. Emails, letters, purchase orders, stuff like that.

Hard proof, not angry rambling from disgruntled former employees. You'd need the services of an impartial forensic accountant, a lawyer with experience in both corporate and government law, and real investigators. Big companies are learning how not to create electronic paper trails on stuff like this, or have gotten much better at creating layers of obfuscation to keep their real intentions secret.

All this takes money, and lots of it. While there are some groups that oppose fracking that have that kind of juice, they will most assuredly need to see hard evidence before they commit their resources into exposing this. There is a bonus, though, if you do get that evidence: you can use it to drum up local heat among the non-voters in your area, and that might prove the tipping point for your man. Again, and it bears repeating, hard evidence. Not vague Internet ramblings, but papers, letters, emails, receipts, and cash transfers (that's what the accountant is for).

You need a numbers guy. Block by block house by house, you figure out who is for, who is against. Hold coffee klatches like the Kennedy women did. Have your guy start out in areas of the city where he is fairly strong, polishing his look and his speech at house to house meet and greets. Once he has the poise and confidence, you run him in the areas where he sucks. Check the precincts at the city hall, where are low turnout areas? Where are the high turnouts? What are the counts of who was for who by precinct last few elections. Why?

What percentage is the normal vote of all voters? That info is readily available. lets say it is 50%. Now, he is given the normative 40% of that 50% right off the bat. He needs 51% of the 50% or lets just call it, 3 out of 10 registered voters need to vote for him, but really 3 out of 5 actual voters. He is already given 2 out of those 5, he needs to convince one more out of every 5. Hit the voters, and do some streetcorner get out the votes in the last week before the election.

I agree with him about this in small towns it is more important the person than the political ideas, and this can be an advantage if you are not in the major party for that town, in my area with 10000 abitants it would be in the middle between this and where is important the endorsement of nationl parties, by the way you are right to aim the not registered voters, you know that they didn't voted for the major in charge and probably they are not sticking to the ideas of a specific party, I assume they are mostly kids just turned 18 till 24 years old, it's also easy that most of them want to change the status quo whatever it is so you just need a little populism, you should go in they usually hang out and speek to them ask what they want, explain your ideas but making it look like you agree with them even if it isn't. Find some areas that are more strategic, because the choices of the major will afflict them the most and make sure they know you as a person, possibly a decent one, knoking door to door, they must be aware that you are a candidate and that you showed your face "not like the other one that would not touch them with a stick". Another thing that works here is offering food, like dealing sanwithces in the main square, doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, if it's free food everyone will come and you can shake hands. Another thing in small towns it's futile to talk about national political discussion when voting for the major they do not care about immigration, gun control, or abortion, thay just want to know how their life will improve in the daily life.

The voter register list cost $6. We are going to copy it for people in our group.

If I can get some to vote absentee we have a start. The election is in November.

Hunky. Your first stop needs to be the courthouse and visit the election commission.

For a given election, there is usually a deadline to turn in a certain number of signatures in order to be accepted on the ballot.
If the deadline ahs not passed, you need to get those forms and get busy.

If this deadline has passed, your only possibility is a write in campaign.
Write in campaigns very rarely work but who knows.

We are past that. Our guy is on the ballot. They took us to court to keep us off the ballot- it did not work- we are on the ballot.

need a map of the city, and correlate it by precinct with the votes per precinct. What was the vote last time, what was it before? How many times has the current mayor been mayor? Is he losing or gaining votes if he has been mayor more than once?

Don't worry so much about absentee as getting out votes from people who dont like the current mayor, or who dont vote, absentee is a dead last, those votes are near uncountable.

The current mayor has been in for 25 years. He was voted out and then returned. I voted for him twice- but he has changed.

We only need the last two elections of him then to make the numbers plan, this should be simple.

Editorials in the paper.
Small towns love gossip.
"Who is responsible for the sweetheart deal between XYZ Fracking and the plan to destroy our scenic river and send the tourist dollars elsewhere?"
"Who believes that a few dollars for a dump is more important than the livelihoods of our small businessmen who depend on out of town visitors?"

You don't have to mention his name, you just have to plant the idea in the voter's heads.

And of course, there may be allies to be gained from those editorials already in the paper. Chose the allies that wear the least tinfoil, btw.

I was thinking about this a little more. Get a Cole's Directory, target the areas/addresses with the highest median income-they tend to be more reliable voters and target retirees, and those directly and indirectly linked to agriculture and other mass-water users.

In the targeted flyers, in the most honest "voice" you can muster, show to them the direct cause-and-effects of what electing your guy's opponent will be (re: fracking) contrasted by what your guy can and will do. I know this is PoliSci 101, but it's what gets results. Hammer at those bases-the wealthier ones tend to re-elect incumbents more for convenience than anything else, as do business owners.

Let the kids do the stumping in the poorer neighborhoods-they need the experience and folks of lesser means may be more inclined to listen to them. And get that proof, no matter what. Without that, you don't have a leg to stand on.

We are on this from many angles. We started our own blog- and it gets looked at- we know by the nasty comments.

The mayor says the frack site will bring jobs to the city.

11 of them.

Around 2006 the newspaper was sold to Ganette. So we are managed out of New York. I understand the people who live and work here- for the paper have pushed the limit and were told to tow the corporate line- or else.

I hear rumours that one day there will be criminal charges.

I am just a small guy here- what about the guys who owns $100ks in real estate?

They should be more worried then I am.

How does your boy plan to bring jobs to the city?

Key Issues in the City of xxxx
“I’m not running as a Republican or Democrat. I’m running as an Independent and a proud citizen of xxxx, someone who has a different philosophy and a different plan for bringing our city back to prosperity.”

Citizen Involvement
-Restore ownership of the city to the people
-Increase community involvement city-wide
-Increase voter turnout at both the primary and general elections
**There were only about 600 voters in xxx's 2013 primary election out of nearly 8,000 citizens of
voting age and only 9% of potential voters cast their vote in the 2012 general election**
-Raise awareness of key issues in the city of xxx
-Educate the community on their rights as citizens

Jobs
"I want to remove the restrictions on our local economy by getting rid of the nuisance fees and
regulations that keep new businesses from locating to xxx."
-Keep the jobs we currently have
-Lower fees for businesses
-Attract new industry

Spending
"I am focused on restoring common sense to the way the city money and facilities are managed.
The special interest spending is out of control, while our downtown and neighborhoods crumble."
-Fix buildings that need repaired
-Lower the cost of city employees
-Make street repairs

Improving Downtown
"Our downtown has been ignored for too long."
-Promote downtown businesses
-Recruit more stores
-Attract more entertainment venues
-Provide benches and a public bathroom in the shopping district

Community Issues
"We don't need to raise taxes. The people are over taxed already. What we need to do is make better use of the
money we have every year and redirect it to rehabbing our neighborhoods and infrastructure."
-Preserve property rights
-End eminent domain redevelopment
-Preserve privacy
-Improve city image
-End fluoridation of water

Economy
"We have to work closer with our state representatives to ensure xxxx's local concerns are
taken into consideration as the economy turns around."
-The housing market
-Unemployment
-Taxes
-The environment

It's such a simple thing, but if people are going to be out knocking on doors for the candidate, or passing out flyers in grocery store parking lots (wherever), make sure they have showered, brushed their teeth, and aren't wearing stinking, ragged clothes.

Heretic has a point there. I did the phone calls, placed flyers on windshields and other things when Dad was running for hospital board. When NTCC needed help with a bond election, I worked the phones.

Because I have legal training, I research state laws for people who cannot afford a lawyer free of charge (Bo owes me a steak for yesterday for finding 2 laws the landlady violated).

Yeah- one of our guys has stayed up all night before going to protests- and his clothes and face looked it. I told him about it- funny thing- is when he speaks- he sounds like a lawyer.
