The subfloor should be ripped up as well, since after all the work of replacing everything the odor will probably remain (especially on warm humid days) making the work and expense of replacing carpet & padding all for nothing. We went through this, even after using a special enzyme cleaner on the wood and allowing it to dry thoroughly before covering it with the new padding and carpet. Ugh. It's well worth the extra day of work and slightly more expense to do the job right the first time. Why does she want to SAVE the carpets in the first place? It's so much easier to care for vinyl flooring, and she can always get area rugs for the traffic areas if she prefers to step on something soft. As for cleaning companies, yes they do upholstery too, at least the one I know of does. Be sure to emphasize, "EXTREME ANIMAL URINE PROBLEM" so they'll know to bring the proper products to do the best job. I recently tried to help My best friend salvage an heirloom afghan that had heavy cat urine odor. They had left it draped over a pickup tailgate outside in rainy weather for the entire summer and even after all Maine's heavy rain the odor was STILL enough to make your eyes and throat BURN. I took it home and threw EVERYTHING at it....I started out washing it in tide, oxycleaners, Dawn dish liquid, but no luck...moved on to trying overnight vinegar soaks, overnight enzyme soaks. Still it burned just to be near it. I finally gave up and splashed half a bottle of Chanel No. 5 on it and tumbled it on low setting in the dryer with 4 dryer sheets. It came out SUPER fluffy and soft....I smelled it...ARGH! It still smells a teeny bit...but at least now due to the Chanel No. 5 it's more of a "SEXY piss" smell rather than a "TOXIC piss" smell, by confusing the nose a little. quote:
ORIGINAL: Hillwilliam Cleaning carpets won't work. The carpets will have to be replaced because the urine has soaked through the padding and into the subfloor beneath. She will definitely have to rip out all the carpets and may even have to apply a sealant to the subfloor as wood soaks liquids up nicely.
