For a family history some of my relatives decided to take a DNA Autosomal test. My results are in and they are a shock!!

Family records that we had found in past searches detailed my families history here in North America. They only went back to the 1750’s. They showed I should be a combination of German, Italian, and American Indian.

The autonomic test traces both sides of the family where older tests would only give results for the paternal or maternal lines. The results from Ancestry.com give you a breakdown in percentages of your genetic ethnicity.

It seems I am 10 Percent American Indian

I am 8 Percent Southern European

I am 8 Percent Finnish/Volga-Ural

I am 35 Percent Central European

And I’ll be God Damned if I’m not 39 Percent… of all things… never any inkling... Scandinavian

I just don’t believe it…has anyone else taken a DNA test…and did the results match your long held family history?

Butch

Yes it is Ancestry.com and they offer three types of DNA tests. The test I took cost $100 and takes 6 to 8 weeks for the results.

lol... yep lots of spitting... in a tube then when the lid is closed a stabilizer is injected. A little shaking...sealing in a special container for transport... then sealed in a return addressed provided package...a registration of the numbers on your sample on the website and all done.

did they do the same things as this company does? I heard about this company and I would be more interested in finding out the health stuff and inherited conditions..

"Reports on 240+ health conditions
Test results for 40+ inherited conditions

Discover your lineage, find relatives and more "

No...They just give ancestry data only...Maybe it is why the test is so cheap.

tj the health results are also interesting. Although I did not get them I would be interested in hearing from anyone who did.

Do you think you would want to know? I guess I would but I would also be very apprehensive and could understand those that would want to keep their head in the sand.

I wish Ancestry did provide that info... maybe they will in the future. The only advantage I can see from Ancestry.com is they are one of the largest, if not the largest, genealogy site in the world. With more members the results will be more accurate and you could find more family members to add markers to your linage.

I would be curious, but I'm also a cheap bastard (the Scot ancestry is pretty well confirmed). Maybe someone will get me a gift certificate for Christmas or something.

To your unexpected Scandinavian measure, do keep in mind that the Viking got around those other bits of Europe pretty extensively, so the national/regional history you started with might well be accurate.

When I first saw their ad at first I thought naw, but then I thought about it for a few minutes and yes, I think at some point I would do it.. I need to take care of a few (health) things in the next few months so maybe I will do it then.. it might point out something important, you never know.. and if not then you know that too.. as long as I am the only one that gets that DNA info and not the NSA!

eta- for me, it would be the health info that would be important to me, not so interested in the lineage thing.. I know all I want to about that..

Scandinavian and Germanic (as opposed to, say Poles from Germany) are barely distinguishable at the DNA level. And there are many Germans of Scandinavian descent (and vice versa).

In England, for example, Danes and Anglo-Saxons are so closely related that they can't tell from gravesite DNA whether a cemetery is Danish Viking or Anglo-Saxon (but they can tell the difference between Other Vikings and Anglo Saxon cemeteries by DNA). Which makes sense, since Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians are all from the Jutland peninsula area.

I am hoping to get some more DNA matches to narrow down the areas... So far they have about 50 3rd to 6th cousins I could contact for information.

Vikings didn't really have horns on their helmets. It's just an expression that got misinterpreted. We got around.

Often, the best way to get rid of the Vikings was to marry them.
