I'm curious now. Maybe one day I'll do it.
I do know I'm a good portion Dutch. I believe the remaining is mostly Scottish and English.

Status: offline 		I know that I am either 1/16 or 1/32 Osage, just have to work with the tribe to find my great-grandfather. Mom's side has Scottish and perhaps Irish, with Germanic or Viking blood mixed in (my nieces got the maternal blonde hair). Lizard is 1/4 Filipina (Bo is 1/2) and no one knows his side of the family.

Status: offline 		Nope. Never had a DNA test. I'm not all that curious about it though... My family is pretty cut and dry (from my understanding)

My mothers parents immigrated from Ireland.

My fathers mother immigrated from Africa.

My fathers father was born and never left the state of Louisiana. Most of our family on that side was rooted in slavery or servitude in one form or another sooo..yep...Africans.

It'd be weird if something super surprising came up though, yeah. Maybe someday I'll check it out. Cool info though.

Status: offline 		Records thousands of years old are very hard to come by and DNA is a way to find your families origins and travels over time.

An added benefit is as the database grows branches of the family you may not have known or lost track of can be revealed. For instance a 4th cousin contacted me through the DNA database and it has opened a whole new side of the family I did not no existed and filled in some blanks in the family tree.

Of course you must be interested in family history beyond your present knowledge.

Ancestry.com's dna tests are not very accurate. I know tons and tons of people who have used it and it's far from accurate. I knew people that are of definite European descent but the tests came back saying they were of Indo-Asian descent or African lol.

If you want a more accurate test you need to use 23andme. It costs around $300-$400 and is the best on the market. They track your dna very thoroughly and will even help you to track down others who share your dna who also have used their testing services if that person has agreed to be on their list.

ETA: 23andme does offer dna testing for $99 but it's only the very basics like ancestry.com offers. If you actually want it further broken down and want all the bells and whistles it will cost you much more.

Status: offline 		LW, I looked at their website (23andme) yesterday and got the impression you get the complete spectrum (medical and ancestral) testing for $99. Am I reading this wrong?

To folks who've used 23andme: what did you get and how much was it?

I'm fascinated with the ancestral part and a little scared about the medical revelations, but forewarned is forearmed.

Status: offline 		After looking at their site since I haven't viewed it in quite awhile, it looks like they lowered the price. Wow. It used to be anywhere from $300 and up depending on what level of testing you wanted. Each service was separate. But according to their blog they changed their pricing to make it more accessible to the world and to help the medical world. That's good. I'm glad to see they did that.

I would definitely go with 23andme then if they are the same price now as ancestry.com. Being a genealogist, I used to look into this stuff all the time but have slacked off since I started working again. I really need to start updating my genealogy stuff again.

Status: offline 		I have researched the Autosomal test and have found on multiple sources that it is 98 percent accurate in general and Ancestry.com lists the probabilities of each match. Most 4th to 6th cousins are 96% accurate or above. Just because a name link cannot be found between yourself and a 6th cousin does not mean you are not related genetically...there is a lot of family 6 cousins removed.

I wanted to know my genetic history back a few thousand years and what my ethnicities were... this was my main purpose in taking the test. Finding related people is just an added benefit to me. I have already found two matches genetically and I traced them out through existing family lines and have found them spot on but this was not the purpose of me taking the test.

PS: They're also doing a "get 20% off each kit after the first." So if you have neighbors or friends close by that want to do it as well, $20 off is a pretty good discount.

My sons got me the kit from 23andme for a graduation gift and my spit is being analyzed now

One of their roommates had done it, he showed me his results and how to navigate the site, it's pretty awesome.

When you look at invasions from the east, over the last couple of millennium, I'd be surprised if most presumably European descent didn't actually include some Indo-Asian.

I can tell that by looking at my eye shape, that at some point there was some Cossack who was a descendant of the Khan invasions who got into a great-great-great grandmother's pants.

You bet! I'm Russian on both sides of the family, but pre-Ellis Island around 1900 the trail ends. As forced emigres, they didn't WANT their heritage carried into the US and did a fine job 'Americanizing' themselves to blend in.
