AAkasha -> Total untrackable pre paid cell phone for a weekend (8/17/2013 3:09:22 PM)

I might go on a trip with a few girlfriends for a weekend and am thinking about getting a prepaid cell phone to call some subs. I want it to be untrackable with absolutely no way to trace back to my real name. Can I pay cash and not have my real name connected to it at all? Does anyone have anyone have experience with this?

Or, with legal laws related to terrorism do they require you to sign documentation when you purchase it (even with cash)?

Thanks all.
Akasha

When you activate the service you have to provide certain information for credentials that would have to be faked.

I am not the type to fake anything to the government or companies. My question is -- is the information private to third parties (ie, the people who call me) and is available only to the companies or the government unless subpoenaed? or is up online via reverse search etc for all to see?

Tracphone only really requires a zipcode, so that it knows which towers to activate off of. Part of the activation is asking who you are, via a pre-recorded interactive process, mostly for promotional/marketing purposes.

As mentioned, you can just say Joe Smith, or something. There is no real reason to have a name attached.

From a 911 perspective, it can be tracked to a general area. All phones have GPS integrated. But no called party will know who you are.

No signature required when you buy it.

An online reverse search on the number will will just indicate the city, and carrier.

You could also use a calling card.

That's it in a nutshell. I won't tell you how much fun you can have with one. Text a random number with "Okay, I buried the bodies. Now what?". Stuff like that. At the lot, we'd buy them for our customers who didn't have a phone so they could get financed, so there were always a couple fresh units lying around. I use one for my Craigslist biz.

As submgreenbay said, they can be physically tracked, perhaps down to a 3 meter area thanks to our good buddies in the NSA, so be advised to have your fun shortly before the phone becomes one with the recycling bin. Remember to remove the SIM card before you do this, your prints and DNA are gonna be all over that thing.

I've put some thought into these things, can't you tell?[;)]

I am curious, you have not mentioned your husband in a long time. Are you divorced?

you are just a tad warped, aren't you??? [:D]

You could say that.

From what I know of burner phones, they are relatively untraceable for the kind of thing you want to do. If you were talking hiding from government surveillance or whatnot, that would be a different thing, but keeping random subs from figuring out who you are they would do fine.

littlewonder -> RE: Total untrackable pre paid cell phone for a weekend (8/17/2013 8:45:13 PM)

To be honest, I doubt most subs would know how to trace you even with your normal phone.

I'm sure there'll be one or two that can access the Deep Web and the reverse-lookup tools there are pretty good.

I am getting the feeling you are hiding some deep dark secrets behind those shades.. [;)]

the reverse look up will just tell them where they bought the phone and what code they live in or lived in but not where they are.

We are on 12 years and going strong. He's sporting a few bruises right now thanks to current mood and wearing them like badges of pride, and also accompanying me on my possible trip to montreal to see the boytoy I met right here on CM (they are very close friends) to see the Ducks play in October (open relationships DO WORK!).

It obviously won't provide anything like a live location, but reverse number lookups often do provide a full name and address thought to be associated with the phone number, which I think is the concern here.

My question is -- is the information private to third parties (ie, the people who call me)?

As has already been pretty well addressed, purchasing a prepaid phone or SIM card will generally not expose any information about the customer to public databases or to the numbers they call. In 2010, following Faisal Shahzad's Times Square bomb plot, which made use of a prepaid phone, there was a bill introduced in the Senate to require a verified identity for all prepaid phone purchases, but it died in committee over privacy concerns. I think some states and localities have looked into similar legislation, but there is no federal requirement to provide any form of identification. Some companies, like Ready SIM, don't ask for any information from customers.

Of course, to maintain the anonymity of a number, you would want to avoid giving out the number in conjunction with your name or address (e.g. for any sort of application, purchase, or competition) as that information might eventually get sold and end up in some reverse number lookup database.

Glad to hear it.

RochesterDomme -> RE: Total untrackable pre paid cell phone for a weekend (8/18/2013 9:09:39 AM)

If you dial *67 before you dial the number, your number shows up as either private or blocked and it doesn't work if they hit redial.  They get a message saying the number is private.
