The guy in the first link....
Does bee keeping turn you looney? Or does it just attract them?

I'm willing to contribute $50 toward a film crew getting this all on tape.

Absolutely the best of luck to you. I'm sure you will do well on your initial adventure and all of those to come. One of these days, I'll be looking forward to that beard of yours being a pic of a beard of bees.

Well, the first day did not go well. I loaded the car with plastic tubs, 5 gallon Home Depot buckets, pry bars, a bee vacuum, a smoker, a couple of knives to cut comb, etc.

I found that the scaffold didn't make me feel safe for the main job. So I tackled the small, soffit job first.

I looked at the bees and thought, "No way. Those are yellowjackets. I called my mentor, who had seen them previously with me, and he confirmed that they were in fact bees. I called the leader of the local club and she told me that yellowjackets live in ground burrows, not under soffits. So I kept going, Sawzalling off siding until I finally said, "Dammit, I KNOW what bees look like. THOSE ARE WASPS!"

I did a little for the large job. Suffice it to say I left behind some pretty pissed-off bees. I ripped out some boards - nothing. I accidentally punctured some particle board with a screwdriver, and honey oozed out. So I know I will need to remove the particle board.

Tomorrow I get them for sure.

I perceive an entomologist in you...

So what happened to the wasps?

DS! That's so exciting! My aunt and cousins keep bees. They are awesome. The honey is wonderful!

Good luck, be prepared to get stung and have fun naming them! Lol totally kidding.

They've been granted a temporary reprieve until the bees are out. Then they get killed.

Okay, I'm still alive.

I dunno if I mentioned this, but I have a fear of heights. So working on an 18" plank while 20' up in the air would not have been my choice.

First, I smoked the bees to settle them down.

Then, I ripped off a bunch of siding with pry bars and hammers. There was particle board underneath. I realized that the bees had set up camp on the other side of the particle board, in the cavity formed between studs.

I Sawzalled the board at the perimeter of the cavity, and broke off chunks of particle board with bits of comb attached, and dumped it into a waiting plastic tub. That exposed the real comb inside the house. I cut out the comb with a kitchen knife and dumped that in the tub as well. I had hoped to find the queen, but it was a mob scene of bees, and I couldn't find her. I saw a cluster of bees in the upper corner, and used the bee vac to suck them up.

I gingerly carried the tub down, as well as the vacuum. I put them in my open trunk and drove home. Before doing that, I opened up the bee suit and took some breaths of fresh air - it was HOT in that suit. I was surprised to find that a stray bee had gotten onto my neck and stung me. I think I got about ten stings all day.

Once home, I re-suited and I transferred the comb to a hive box. I had expected to fasten it to existing frames using rubber bands. The comb was all twisted and not amenable to being attached to straight frames, so I just dumped it on the floor of the hive.

Next step is to combine these bees with an existing hive of mine.

Lots of grumpy bees all over the yard yesterday. My sub was not amused.

I imagine she'd have been less amused if you'd made her do it. Congratulations on successfully completing your operation without making the evening news. I've been lurking this thread, but haven't had anything constructive to add. Still didn't, but I felt it was appropriate. Having lived in Utah for some time, have you considered researching the industry next door? They aren't called "The Beehive State" for nothing, you know.

Yes, you are still alive and relatively unharmed. Great success from my POV !!

Good luck with the grumpies, I suspect they will settle down soon. And enjoy that delicious honey.
