I don't know how it happens but when my purse starts to get too heavy I know it is time to dump my change into the jar. Normally I keep tossing coins in until I see it is about 3/4 full, then toss it in one of those coinstar machines so there isn't so much pressure on the jar. One year I got 350 (after coinstars cut) and used it on a vegas vacation.
This year as fund started to get tight I looked at my jar with more practical needs in mind.
Instead of tossing money away (2%!) by taking it to Coinstar I opted to look at how much money was really inside.
WOWIE... 589 bucks
Guess it was so high because most of it was not pennies.

So, do you save coins and cash them in now and again?
What is your average take?

There is a toddler in my home who will take any change he sees, including on my desk, and promptly put it in his pickle jar bank. not that I mind really, since I give it to him anyway.

It doesn't build up the way it used to, but I cashed out for $189, last trip to the machine. 2%? Holy crap, we are getting raped on what they can charge in California, but banks will no longer accept loose change. A rolling machine would have paid for itself, and will, next time.

I still have the pewter mug on my dresser, and some plastic jugs in the closet, but a lot stays in the car, and gets used for milk, or the odd lottery ticket.

We have a 5 gallon water bottle that we throw our change in. When it gets to the point where I can barely lift it, we take it to the credit union. They have a Coin Star machine that doesn't charge a fee if you're a member. Then we put the money in our vacation fund.

I have one of those large water bottles that I toss my change into. Over the years I've dipped into it and nearly emptied it several times when work was scarce. Now I not only toss my change into it, but when I go to a fast food place and pay with a $10 bill, I will take all the change, including the dollar bills, and put it into the bottle. I counted what was in it last winter and had just under $400.

ETA...Our local CoinStars charged 8% last time I went, which was quite some time ago.

I'm with Rich in the "not like I used to" category. I rarely use cash anymore. Ergo, not as much change. Also, we don't really have coin star here. (I know. It's weird.) That means that I try to keep the collection somewhat under control.

I save mine in a one gallon glass Seagram's Seven bottle[left over from my college days]. My bank no longer accepts rolled coins and requires you to bring it in loose. Normally I have $300 to $400 in mine, depending on the number of quarters in the bottle.

I have also almost stopped using cash. I even have to break down periodically and go to the bank to get a roll of quarters for laundry.

My brother, who still uses cash, has several empty water cooler bottles full of change. He and his wife call it their vacation fund. I've got a bet with him that he won't be able to get his bank to take them when he's ready to cash them out.

I save my change but usually cash it before it goes
over twenty or thirty dollars. I'd like to say I always
save it but I'm just as likely to spend it. I still use cash
( and coins) especially for small purchases. I'm that
annoying person in front of you at the yogurt place
counting her quarters. I also keep a coin purse/ wallet
in my purse.

An upstairs neighbor was moving, when I was a kid, and decided to bring his 5-gallon water bottle full of change down the stairs on the hand truck. The second good jolt broke the bottom right out, and dumped the entire contents into the dense hedges below.

My friends and I made many treasure hunts into the bushes that summer.

But I can't see putting that small amount on a credit card.
Not when I have it in my purse... somewhere... just give
me a minute... I could have sworn I had a five dollar bill...

My "baby" is 7 and can still be paid with "Washington's and Lincolns ". I actually get the dog walked, floors swept, dishwasher unloaded all for a couple of quarters and some pennies!

My son one time asked if he could have the coin jar. Figuring it was less than 20 bucks I said sure. He found over half a dozen jars all over the house and made over $150. And his bank has a free coin counting machine. It prints out a receipt that you take up to the teller.

It was the last time he ever got the coin jar.

Not only does a machine take its 'cut' (as much as 11.9%!!!), it may also shortchange you (literally) because people throw a bunch of crap in with the money like lint, hair, fingernails, even teeth!

Apparently it bungs up the machine's ability to count.

I try to use my change continuously, not a fan of having it around being all heavy in my purse and such.

I tend bar part time and save it all. It goes in plastic beer pitchers. With mostly quarters, each one holds about $250.00. I had 9 of them full but recently cashed in 3 of them. $ 760.00 ( and change ). I have 6 left and just started on number 7.

I bought one of those coin jars which tell you how much you have in it.

i left my old apt, with a coin jar which I'm sure had $50 in it. boy was i a bit pissed when i remembered i had left it.
