splatterpunk -> why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 8:45:58 AM)

it's 2013, and this site's demographic breakdown still skews heavily white and hetero. why the lack of diversity and what, in your opinion, can be done to improve the situation?

mnottertail -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 8:59:27 AM)

define skews. cuz pretty much..................UH, NO.

What are the percentages that are a significant and meaningful deviation from the standard distribution?

splatterpunk -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 9:08:59 AM)

i don't have the demographic data in front of me, but eyeballing the forums i don't see a significant number of queer posters or posters of color. far fewer of both than one would like to see on a kink site with a large user base, especially when compared to other sites that it would be poor taste and bad form to name here.

if you have different data though i'd love to see it. it would be nice to be way off base.

I see lotsa fags, most of em pretty good friends, and prolific posters, and a few blacks, seems there is more into raceplay than meets the eye, and that aint allowed here, but they are all over fet, now; don't know why there aint a great deal of black folk congregating here like other sites, but they may have a better answer, since they are in the middle of their life.

splatterpunk -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 9:13:48 AM)

see i haven't noticed that many gay posters, but i read the boards pretty haphazardly. the lack of posters of color is troubling to me though.

also persons of color posting does not necessarily mean "race play." like i don't think that's what you meant to say, but i do wanna be clear about that.

and I thought I was pretty clear in not saying that, but black folk congregate at the raceplay forums there (so one segment that doesnt do CMs rules). They are not here in representative (within the black community) numbers and for what reason I do not know, there may be black folk to explain it happen by....

Splatter, are you basing this opinion on the number of profiles on the other side or the number of posters on this side or what? How are you determining this "lack of diversity"?

splatterpunk -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 9:26:05 AM)

scrolling through journal entries, i'd say the other side looks *slightly* more diverse than the message board side, esepcially when you discount the number of "journal entries" from transparently fake profiles putatively belonging to skinny white women.

the site as a whole certainly appears less diverse than other sites.

kalikshama -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 9:30:30 AM)

Perhaps it's more obvious on fet due to self-selecting groups? Here, you can't always tell people's ethnicity and never AFAIK orientation from their avatars and sometimes they don't put it in their profiles either, especially if they have hidden their profile because they are just here for the forums. In Community Discussions, it's easier to see who is queer when pronouns are used during relationship discussions, but in P&R on popular topics like gun control, Zimmerman, and Benghazi, a person's orientation would not be apparent.

That being said, the BDSM events I have attended appeared to have been comprised of far less than the 36% people of color determined to make up the US population by the 2010 Census. That's been true in my current state of Massachusetts, as well as my former state of Florida, where my work place was so diverse that at one point I was the only white woman. (International Food Fridays were a blast!)

I think a better question would be "Are people of color less kinky or less likely to express it socially?"

LadyPact -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 9:50:50 AM)

I'm inclined to agree with the OP as far as forum participation. Why that is, I honestly couldn't say. Like kalikshama, I've definitely lived in places where the demographics of the kink community weren't really an accurate reflection of the area. However, it is My understanding that this varies according to geographic location, with certain larger cities doing better in this category than others.

It is a topic that I've seen come up from time to time, including here on the boards in the past. One of the things that has stuck with Me is only a partial answer and that is what tends to happen in smaller groups in some areas. At times, what happens is that a person of color sets out to their first munch and finds themselves being the *only* person of color in attendance and that has a tendency to discourage their return. Of course, that leaves the next person of color in the same situation, so the pattern repeats.

As for the boards being primarily het, I'm going to go with My best guess. That being, we het folks, for the most part, are quite tame in comparison when it comes to our activities. There aren't as many topics here that are similar to the level of scenes that people see at the better gay leather clubs. I'm sure there is a part of that demographic that gets bored with us.

We have some black posters. Dark feather if I remember correctly. Absolutchocolate, she's black. And there was a hot chic who is black and she writes in hot pink.

I think we have quite a few gay posters.

But I see what you mean.

Rochsub paints his face blue, but he isn't your average poster.

FanceeFreak -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 11:16:19 AM)

FanceeFreak here, a proud African-American sub. There are quite a few people of color on CM I am contacted regularly by people of color. They just may not post on As The Collar Turns.

mnottertail -> RE: why the lack of diversity on cm? (8/26/2013 11:47:58 AM)

You are already disproportionately represented.

There's also lillybopeep, Ms-something - she's a Domme, well educated, cool tattoos, but neither of them are posting much these days, which is a shame.
