The Obama administration has concluded there is “high confidence” that Syrian President Bashar Assad used chemical weapons against his own people on Aug. 21, according to an unclassified four-page intelligence estimate released by the White House Friday afternoon.
The report found that the chemical attack included the use of a nerve agent and that it killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

“Our intelligence community has carefully reviewed and re-reviewed information regarding this attack and I will tell you it is more than mindful of the Iraq experience,” Secretary of State John Kerry said in a Friday afternoon speech. “We will not repeat that moment.”
Kerry said the United States has a responsibility to act in Syria and needs no approval from other nations.

“The United States of America makes our own decisions, based on our own timelines,” Kerry said.
The statement marks the second time this week the Obama administration has used Kerry to deliver its Syria message to the world. On Monday he was the first administration official to categorically declare that the Assad government used chemical weapons during the Aug. 21 attack, calling it “undeniable.”
Kerry urged people to read the report, released during his speech.
“Read for yourself, everyone, those listening, read for yourselves the evidence from thousands of sources,” Kerry said.

“In addition to U.S. intelligence information, there are accounts from international and Syrian medical personnel; videos; witness accounts; thousands of social media reports from at least 12 different locations in the Damascus area; journalist accounts; and reports from highly credible nongovernmental organizations,” the report said.
“We assess with high confidence that the Syrian government carried out the chemical weapons attack against opposition elements in the Damascus suburbs on August 21. We assess that the scenario in which the opposition executed the attack on August 21 is highly unlikely,” it added.
“The body of information used to make this assessment includes intelligence pertaining to the regime’s preparations for this attack and its means of delivery, multiple streams of intelligence about the attack itself and its effect, our post-attack observations, and the differences between the capabilities of the regime and the opposition.”
Believing they have established that the attack was ordered by the Assad regime, administration officials say they are now turning to the question of how to respond. Senior administration officials discussed the finding of the report with 26 high-ranking members of Congress on Thursday night and solicited the views of lawmakers on how to respond.
“This is the indiscriminate, inconceivable horror of chemical weapons. This is what Assad did to his own people,” Kerry said. “Now that we know what we know … the question is, what will we do?”

Kerry promised that any U.S. military action undertaken by President Barack Obama would not resemble the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or the international coalition assault that toppled Muammar Qadhafi in Libya in 2011.
Also Friday, the National Security Council is briefing all lawmakers from key congressional committees on Syria, multiple Hill aides said.
The committees involved in the calls include the House Foreign Affairs Committee, House Armed Services Committee, Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senate Armed Services Committee. The House panels and Senate panels are being updated in separate calls.
One Senate aide said the call is similar to the one held Thursday evening for congressional leaders and top lawmakers on national security and foreign affairs.

Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly how it's going to work out. Good luck with that, John.

Obama/Kerry.

Bush/Powell with a Hawk/Dove role reversal twist.

Same bad results...US troops used as global policemen.

How was it we (the US) were able to get all that intel, but the blue hats investigating it couldn't? Inquiring minds want to know...

simple .. CIA, & the usage of Spy satellite all over .. with some radars in all the sea around , & in the 2 basis in Turkey so they can see who is firing at whom, not to mention Israel & the huge radars they got there & its only 45 miles away from Damascus ..

I mean if he want to know Mr. Obama can know what color of my underwear ..

kalikshama -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 11:59:14 AM)

Mom called to let me know Kerry was speaking...he was sounding like he was gearing up for something major so I was both surprised and relieved when he said boots on the ground wasn't an option.

During his speech I saw on the channel's scroll that Cameron loses Commons vote on Syria action.

mnottertail -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 12:00:29 PM)

Well, then he's said it without saying it, hasn't he?

So we are gonna do a Libya like thing with no coalition, most likely.

And, the assessments of Syrians? One UN investigator said it looked like things were pointing towards the rebels having used the chemical weapons, though it was also stated that it wasn't definitive evidence to that point.

Here's the thing... in the last 18 months Asswad has killed over 100,000 people many of them also children with bullets and bombs so why now?

mnottertail -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 3:05:07 PM)

Why indeed? Why is Christmas December 25th? Why is the vernal equinox in March 20 of 2014?

RacerJim -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 3:27:25 PM)

Kerry? John F(raud) Kerry? That Kerry? Or this Kerry...

“For the American people to accept the legitimacy of this conflict and give their consent to it, the Bush administration must first present detailed evidence of the threat of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction and then prove that all other avenues of protecting our nation’s security interests have been exhausted,” Kerry wrote. “Exhaustion of remedies is critical to winning the consent of a civilized people in the decision to go to war.”

Kerry went on to say that Congress must be consulted and that the administration must not act on its own for the “legitimacy of our cause.”

“For the sake of our country, the legitimacy of our cause and our ultimate success in Iraq, the administration must seek advice and approval from Congress, laying out the evidence and making the case. Then, in concert with our allies, it must seek full enforcement of the existing cease-fire agreement from the United Nations Security Council,” Kerry wrote.

Charles6682 -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 4:15:18 PM)

I hope Syria does not become Obama's "Iraq". What's ironic, is people like Obama and Kerry are the people who said we shouldn't just invade Iraq without a valid reason. We see how that disaster turned out. The U.S. need's to slow down and let the U.N. Inspectors finish their jobs. I am not saying we shouldn't do anything, if it's true. But boots on the ground would be impossible. Limited airstrikes, no fly zone and arming "moderate" rebels, whoever they are.   I don't expect all of the World to want to help. I mean, what do Russia and China actually know about human right's?  But America should slow down. The U.K. already already helped America with Iraq when very few would help, you can't blame them for not wanting to jump in the deep end so quickly again. We here in the U.S., really can't afford to just go jumping in the deep end either, without first knowing all the fact's.

Hi Ashjor..... I`m glad you are still able to post.

DS...... The UN are only investigating if chemical weapons were used, and if so, which type. I am guessing that if they had said part of the remit was to blame one side or another, they wouldnt have got permission to investigate.

TheHeretic -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 5:48:23 PM)

FR

According to much cited NBC poll (that's the parent of MSNBC, for the less intelligent regurgitators of OFA talking points) 79% of Americans believe the President needs to take his case to Congress before acting.

PeonForHer -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 5:49:06 PM)

'Kerry on Syria'

Sounds like a tittersome film from the 1970s starring Syd James and Barbara Windsor. [:D]

Well, a bit of levity can be helpful at times.

I'll get my coat.

VP Kerry is quite the busy-body.

Lucylastic -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 6:07:31 PM)

I got the impression he wont bypass congress, even for airstrikes... But then.... hes fucked either way. Cracks about his peace prize,or letting two red lines go, or hes a chicken, or its all propaganda, That he should be impeached, will drip ....no matter what
If he bypasses congress for whatever reason..I will be thoroughly disgusted, not that that matters in any way.
It will be interesting to see what happens if he does put it before congress and the aftermath.
will he do a cameron?

servantforuse -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 6:26:46 PM)

Obama is a bigger idiot that most people think he is if he acts on this. He has no allies and refuses to go to congress.

where has he refused to go to congress???
the idiot isnt obama here!!!!
did you actually listen to the speech??
stop looking in the mirror

TheHeretic -> RE: Kerry On Syria (8/30/2013 6:36:57 PM)

Lucy, perhaps it is those different civics classes again, but having the SecState make a speech doesn't meet the standard being asked of the President here.

And no. I didn't listen to the speech. I read the transcript earlier today. I flat cannot stand listening to that "too dumb to duck" fuck Kerry speak.
