......ABC News - President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (ABC News)

President Obama today conceded that he could fail to convince the American public to back proposed U.S. military strikes against Syria, but said that members of Congress should vote to approve the action anyway.

"It's conceivable that, at the end of the day, I don't persuade a majority of the American people that it's the right thing to do," Obama said in response to a question from ABC News during a solo press conference at the conclusion of the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

But, Obama said, members of Congress need to consider the lessons of World War II and their own consciences and vote 'yes' to authorize the use of force, even if it means going against the opinion of the majority of their constituents. "

***************************************

I do believe the Congress is supposed to be a representative body of the PEOPLE. Not only do major polls show the American people to be anywhere between 68 to 74% opposed to this idiotic intervention idea.....but now President Obama has reached a new high water mark on the Absurdity River - comparing initial American reticence to entering WW2, to the reticence to enter in the Syrian civil war. How anyone leading a world power can possess such a sorry lack of perspective as is necessary to make THAT comparison, is beyond belief.

The man is becoming the laughing stock of the world.....and America with him. No wonder Putin looks so good at the G20. Look what he is getting compared to.

World War 2? Doesn't he ("The man from nowhere") mean World War 3?
HE doesn't own the congress, The People do!

I don't think he's aware of that! Saw Nancy Pelosi pushing her grandchild as a reason we should be for a war with Syria. Puke!

Of course, conveniently hidden in the statement "fail to convince a majority of americans" is the fact that right now he's at 10%. That isn't "failing to convince a majority". That's ignoring damned near everyone.

Have them look at hat and vote their conscience.
The guys with the guns are the ones who President Pantload wants to spend our money to help.

There's a technical term for this: "Making the tough calls". While the Will Of The People is all fine and good in most cases, sometimes 'leadership' means doing things which aren't popular. This is why we have government, rather than running everything by an internet opinion poll.

In this case, I'd have to say that bringing the Syrians to account for using nerve gas is one of those unpleasant things which needs to be done, however problematical it is. The thing I find interesting about this is that Obama has put the Radicals in a position where they either have to forgo their very real pleasure of blowing up Arabs, or of giving Obama something he wants. How they'll cope with that is beyond me.

Odd how the right fail to mention a certain Republican Senator who wants Obama to go further than is already being spoken about.

LOL, dude... don't even start with me. I am well accustomed to leadership positions and the need to "make the tough call". I never claimed to "represent" anyone in my leadership positions yet even so I do not simply blow off the MASSED collective opinions of those under me.

He can make all the "tough calls" he wants. But the moment he says that he cares not one whit what 90% of the populace wants, red & blue alike, he is no longer representing anyone but himself. He is now a king/tyrant rather than a president. I agree, that must've been a "tough call" for him.

Feels so strongly about it he was caught playing poker on his phone while the hearings were going on:)

I dont believe there is noble peace prize

servantforuse -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:11:10 PM)

It's nobel, but I expect snarkey comments. He is still an idiot and is out there in no mans land.

FR

A thought from noted lefty Edmund Burke:

"Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays instead of serving you if he sacrifices it to your opinion."

Lucylastic -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:27:55 PM)

That was snark? poor pussy cat.....
so do you think he is doing this because he has a "political" death wish?
setting himself up for impeachment?
He quit iraq, he is trying to quit afghanistan, but gung ho about a short sharp shock against practically everyones opinions, left right and moderate( I omit fundy twunts who wanna bomb the shit outta the "eebil moooozlems")
if you seriously thin its because he is an idiot then your post is as relevant to being imbecilic as his.
DO you think its the money behind him, do you think its the war machine.... he is either a tyrant or he is an idiot.... and before any body accuses me of backing him, I dont, I am looking for a reason beyond his "incompetence"...sadly incompetent people are looking to do anything but think.

servantforuse -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:34:52 PM)

The House might not even vote on this. It is a huge embarrassment for Obama. He is out there alone on this one. It reminds me of the Rev. Wright. "His chickens have come home to roost"..

Lucylastic -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:37:44 PM)

what will they do? refuse to vote?

servantforuse -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:41:17 PM)

They might not vote at all because of the final results. It will be an embarrassment for the chosen one.

Lucylastic -> RE: .....President Obama Urges Congress to Vote Conscience on Syria, Even If Public Opposed (9/6/2013 7:43:26 PM)

final results of what?
