Oh my indeed! Fifty Shades of Takei is priceless (link # 2). Now if George came over to read the book, I bet I could get through the whole thing.

........... The one thing it did do? It stopped publishers from assuming everyone is from the bible belt and that if they dare publish something sexual they will face boycotts from "the American People" and so forth, they realized there is a market for sex out there. E-books have allowed books to be published by mainstream publishers that wouldn't sell in paperback, because people still are so hung up with sex or letting others know they enjoy it. More importantly, maybe it means some well written books written by people in the scene actually have a chance to be published, and I am not talking fringe publishers. ..........

I disagree in part. Sex always has and always will sell books. Even the lame crap in the Gor book series sold 23 million copies as it evolved from a plot-driven space opera adventure to become more sexual, focusing on relationships between dominant men and submissive women in slavery. Some called the later books, "sadomasochistic pornography involving the ritual humiliation of women". His last DAW book (sadomasochistic pornography style) sold 3 million copies where his first books (plot-driven space opera) only sold hundreds of thousands.

It is hard to tell if it was fear or spite that got the Gor author blacklisted. Despite his million seller, when the old man (Donald A. Wollheim) fell ill and his daughter took over DAW, she refused to buy anymore Gor books. He was blacklisted. The blacklisting lasted 14 years and I think it was fear that motivated it.

He did sell a three-part Telnarian series to Warner Books even though he was blacklisted. The first book, The Chieftain, had a 67 percent sell-through. The second, The Captain, had a 91 percent sell-through. Those are stellar numbers. The Warner editor for the Telnarian series was replaced by an editor from one of the blacklisting presses. That new editor canceled the series despite its success and without waiting to see how the third book would do.

So alt sex carries a stigma . . . sex always sells, but alt sex can be risky. In this perspective I agree with what you said. Maybe 50 Shades success will do some good making alt sex a more appealing market risk.

I wouldn't base whether you belong doing bdsm based on a fictional book that sucked, frankly.

A professional *anything* is nothing more than someone who is paid for that particular thing. The author of 50 Shades became a professional when her fist ebooks were bought by people other than her friends.

Somewhere on this site is my review of it.

It is one of the worst books I've ever read and I read ALOT.

I don't mean to step on any toes here but I liked the book. I didn't take it seriously. I have read romance novels since I was 11 and am used to people trashing them but it's an entertainment. Some people like them, some don't. There are a lot of writers that I can't stand like Stephen King or Jane Austin that many others love. So the writing doesn't meet some people's standards. That doesn't mean it's worthless to others. If you don't like it, don't read it but understand that others may see or enjoy things you don't. I didn't read it for the sex or d/s. I liked how a damaged man grew beyond his past and finally was able to find true love. It's not rocket science. It's not meant to be but it's what some people like. Oh they have cast the guy from Sons of Anarchy as Christian Grey which I am glad for because I find him hot. Love for everyone.

Candy Cane,
Thank you for your perspective. I was also looking for a favorable counter point. It seems you are saying that it is poorly written, but it is a good romance story plot if you are able to tolerate the writing style.

Thank you for your input. I managed to suffer through all 25 of the original Gor books and found them similar. The writing was atrocious, so bad I even started counting commas. One sentence had an amazing 17 commas. Nonetheless, I did have moments of enjoyment in some of the adventures during the series.

Again, thank you for your voice on the topic.

-Kalon Eric
