I really dont know if this will help, but:

When I hit that space I do the following:

I spend time with my 20 month old great nephew.

I play with my dogs, the pup has decided that shadows on the wall are evidently demons.

Or I go to the local no kill shelter and volunteer.

i know a lady that thrives on people feeling sorry for her, i say she is an adult and needs to learn from her mistakes and get off the pity party...

get a life, do something you want to do and dont involve others in your pity party...just saying

Easy to say IF you don't have some type of chronic pain issue or serious illness.

I think it is always harder to engage in self-pity when one is being proactive.

I got this from sunshinemiss :

And the rest of the story...

Yes! I think that is a great site! I'm quite impressed with it. I used it for a couple of months to see if I could come up with a project for my students (I did in fact, but that's a different post!). I don't ask them to do something I haven't tried, so I followed one of the game paths. I enjoyed it a lot. After recently bringing it up on the threads again, I went back and looked at it. I had made a plan for running a 10K back last year when I was working on it... and I DID run it several months ago this year! It was kind of fun to look back at where I'd been (hoping, hoping I could go that far) and realizing that I'd completed it!

I've found that exercise helps me. Even if I'm not focused on it, and all i do is sit on my stationary bike and ride while I watch a television show or just get off the bus a couple stops early and walk home. It doesn't necessarily help in the moment, but in the long run it helps.

best,
sunshine

Turn the self into self respect and self dignity. They are the opponents of self pity. So anything that helps the self, even enjoyment, will eventually help do away with self-pity. What you much watch out for is depression, which I lump into self hatred or self anger. Depression can manifest in many ways, and one of the main ways is self pity.

Been there and wrestled that demon myself long ago. It still tries to come around from time to time.

A friend is drowning in a sea of self-pity, and I confess I'm not immune to that ailment myself.

So I'm curious.

What works for folks to swim out of self-pity before the currents drag you down?
