http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/pastor-arrested-in-polk-before-he-could-burn-korans/2141271     Does anyone here remember Pastor Terry Jones? He is the Pastor from Florida, who 2 years ago made national headlines for threatening to burn Korans. Well, Pastor Terry Jones was at it again. This time in "Polk County", which isn't too far from where I live. The reason he was arrested was because he was driving on felony charges of "unlawful conveyance of fuel" as he and another bigot were arrested. The local Sheriff of Polk County warned Mr.Jones. The sheriff of Polk County is known as a "no non-sense" type of guy. Clearly, Mr.Jone's didn't take the sheriff serious but I bet he does now.

DomKen -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 3:51:18 AM)

That's funny. He certainly has the right to do or say what he wants but driving around with a trailer full of books soaked in kerosene? And what was with him carrying a firearm without a permit? Is he really so stupid he thinks no LEO would check his permit?

Charles6682 -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 3:56:36 AM)

The guy has lost any sense of reality. While I don't support him in anyway, he does have his right to free speech. Even the military tried to tell this Pastor Jones not to go through with this. What got him in trouble was the kerosene in the back. I am surprised he showed up with that truck, even though he was clearly warned. As for the gun, I didn't know he lost his permit. Florida is known for having relaxed gun laws but this still isn't the wild west. There's still procedure to follow, even here in the "Gunshine state" as some of the locals call it.

momndaughter -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 4:13:02 AM)

"Unlawful conveyance of fuel" sounds a bit of a stretch, but it may well be that there's no law regarding "being culpably bigotted" or "wilful rabble-rousing"...

Hillwilliam -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 5:14:45 AM)

It appears that someone else has been arrested for 'gross stupidity'.

Has no one ever heard of hauling something first, unloading it and THEN pouring kerosene on it?

I believe the answer to that is a resounding, "yes."

While I see your point, he would still have had to convey that fuel. The amount of fuel he used may have been an issue, regardless of whether or not it was soaked into books or held in tanks.

The Asst. Pastor also got cited for not having a permit for the trailer, or whatever it was. For some people, the right to exercise their stupidity and ignorance, is overdone.

TheHeretic -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 7:07:52 AM)

FR

Right. People go to jail for traffic infractions all the time. I'm sure stifling unpopular speech had nothing whatsoever to do with any of this...

tweakabelle -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 7:08:35 AM)

I wonder how many lives have been saved by this arrest?

Because had this looney been allowed to go ahead with his insane plan to burn c3000 Korans, lives would almost certainly have been lost. Most likely American lives too, among all the others. Americans serving overseas would end up paying for this looney's provocations with their lives. Some patriot hey?

Whoever arrested the nuts ought to be in line for a peace prize of some sort.

That sounds like you're in favor of stifling free speech because it might be used by some other person as reason for killing. While that may have merit, it sure sounds like you're completely ignoring that the other person chose to kill.

popeye1250 -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 7:18:15 AM)

Yeah, how many christian churches have been burned down in the last six months?

Not at all. I am against hate speech and incitements to violence.

The actions of these two nuts qualify under both of those headings.

That's good.

However, Pastor Jones has every right to show himself a complete jackass. He exercises that right more than most would deem typical. But, in the end, his "offense" isn't the same as someone directly injuring another.

I would have loved to have seen the local Christian churches gather there in protest to his antics. Would have been a wonderful testament to free speech and religious tolerance.

~ FR ~

I'm no fan of this self-appointed "Pastor" but...

If packs of crazed Christians were running around Africa and the Middle East setting fire to mosques in the name of their beloved "Bible" and slaughtering Muslims wholesale, women and children included, I'd find it difficult to fault an Imam for burning a few copies of their hateful "Holy Book" to show them what he thought of it.

Just sayin.

This raises an interesting point.

There would be no doubt that bigots like this would be breaking the law if they incited their own followers to violence. Yet the argument you posed, "you're completely ignoring that the other person chose to kill" could apply just as much to their own followers too. It could be argued that the followers 'chose' to commit violence, hence the person doing the inciting isn't responsible for their followers' actions.

My feeling is that if speech or actions incites violence, and is known to incite violence, then it comes under the microscope. Who commits the violence - friend or foe - isn't as important as the intent behind the words and actions.

In this particular case, the intent is obvious.

Then, "latent" incitement would be included. What of the Imams that support their followers that go apeshit when a douchbag like Jones exhibits his ignorance? Or, the "black power" preachers whose followers get all worked up when some racist shit-for-brains kills a black person for nothing other than race?

jlf1961 -> RE: Biggot Pastor arrested in Florida (9/12/2013 7:55:42 AM)

I wonder what this pastor would think about Michael Monsoor? He probably would scream bloody hell and call for the assassination of President Obama when he found out the Navy is planning on naming a destroyer after a dirty evil god forsaken Muslim.

Absent any quotes to go by, I can't comment on its obviousness. But to "incite" to violence means to encourage, urge, and promote violence. Saying a bunch of nasty things about a person or group isn't "inciting to violence" except in the minds of people who think human beings are lemmings.

The same standard must be applied to all, without fear or favour. When it can be shown that the intent was to knowingly provoke violence, then the person responsible ought to have to account for his/her words and actions to justice.

Then you convey the fuel in jerry cans or another DOT approved device.

What would it take? 10 gallons tops? That's 2 fuel cans.

The dumb SOB was a rolling bomb because he was too stupid to go to Wal Mart and buy a couple of gas cans.

K, I do understand your point, but I think you have failed to understand the mentality of some of these individuals. I mean there are people who have killed or attempted to kill abortion doctors because of wanted posters made by pro lifers. Mosques and synagogues have been splashed with ethnic slurs after some evangelist or fundie christian preacher preached about the evils of the Jewish people or Muslims.

I think you are believing there are more sane, emotionally stable people in this country than there really are. From what I have witnessed over the last few years, emotionally stable, intelligent American citizens are a minority.

The majority of American citizens are complete idiots, I submit the popularity of the TLC series "here comes honey boo boo" as proof.
