as someone who's been in the creative scene, and I don't been the 'douche-bag-champe/douchampe' toilet behind glass con-art art scene, you can immediately CUT/ERADICATE all NEA monies right now, use crowdfunding and crowdsourcing and twitter to get the whole thing done on volunteer freebie schematics, and this is no different to Prod. Assistants in Hollywood and Interns in major publishing companies. Kill money wasted on 'conceptual art', only pay conceptual art with conceptual dollars, and enjoy a spare 20 mil plus to 'make things better' immediately.

Wonder what lie they got caught in? As to hiking in the Smokies, what happens if a hiker starts a forest fire? There are no rangers to notice it? What happens if these hikers need assistance? Things happen in the back country and knowing you can get or signal for help is part of the reason the rangers are there.

FR *Grocery stores on Army bases in the U.S. are closed. The golf course at Andrews Air Force base is open.*

That is a cost, subsidized by the government, and staffed with contractors. There is nothing that could be open at no cost.

The FCC has completely shut down its website. As well, so has the Library of Congress. And the National Archive website.

Nasa is down. National Weather service is still up (with limits). Army is up, ATF is up, FBI is up (with limits). Homeland security is up (with limits)

Not exactly what I was intending... but lets roll with it. Bityakin was saying that the St. Louis arch is self supporting - the fees charged are in excess of the costs to operate.

Well, there are none is the thing they all should be, because you cannot leave them open willy nilly, pick and choose, or the lawsuits would be like cockroaches, and they are not essential, there is no supervisory or support. They cannot be open.

FR EAST ORLEANS — It's hard to get angry if you're staying at the Nauset Knoll Motor Lodge with its unparalleled perch overlooking Nauset Beach. But the federal government's partial shutdown has guests angry indeed, because as of 11 a.m. today they have to leave. Related Stories Ed Benz has operated the motor lodge since 1964 with a lease from the Cape Cod National Seashore, which owns the property. And since the Seashore had to close like all federal parks on Oct. 1, so do all the folks with concessions within them. The 12 rooms at the Nauset Knoll, each featuring picture windows staring at Nauset Beach, were almost totally booked until the motel's seasonal closing date of Oct. 20, manager John Murphy said. But on Tuesday, lodgers were given 48 hours' notice to find other accommodations. With a one-minute commute on foot to the ocean beach for $150 a night (the off-season rate), it will be impossible to find anything quite like the Nauset Knoll.

I am laser like on topic and not derailing, simply pointing out all the flaws in your propositions and conclusions which are manifest. Why the fuck have these threads that are whatif farces, while the truth is vastly different? Look, you want some dispensation to flame, bait, and bash, while couching this opera bouffe in unrealistic terms. Why should I agree to something you would never do, never have done, nor never will do? I reiterate my accurate answer, there are none that could be opened at no cost. Zero.

The only thing they charge for is some lame movie and the tram to the top which is pretty cheap ($10 IIRC). The park and the Old Courthouse do generally have a fair number of Park Rangers on hand so I doubt their salaries and maintenance of the Arch and Courthouse are really paid for out of those 10 buck tickets.

FR An iconic Philadelphia restaurant has been forced to close its doors and turn away booked parties because of the government shutdown. City Tavern at 3rd and Walnut Streets in the Old City section of the city has been told it must close until the U.S. Congress passes a spending bill. The restaurant, which opened for the first time in 1773 and was frequented by the nation's founding fathers, sits inside Independence National Historical Park and the building is owned by the U.S. National Parks Service. Fuck the government.
