Hmmmmmm. that is much ado about nothing, it has been that way for some time. That page being down (since there is no info there anyhow....) I would judge it non-essential to government operations, a blank page that redirects you to another site.

Perhaps someone can effectively argue the contrapositive?

DC parking enforcement is handled by the city, not the federal government. The DC city government hasn't been shut down. Why would they stop enforcing city parking regulations?

NBC has rewritten their story (nicely styled as an "update"). However, until this morning the amberalert.gov link to the Active Alerts list at missingkids.com would not have been available to anyone going to amberalert.gov while it was down.

Additionally, amberalert.gov hosts a list of the appropriate state-level contacts for every state, including phone numbers and websites. This, too, would have been unavailable to anyone needing that information.

Arguably they could have found it if they knew how to look for it, and probably found missingkids.com too. But on the other hand, not everybody is web savvy and the whole point of amberalert.gov is so people don't have to do that.

So, essential to government operations, versus essential? I'd say it's more essential by any definition than maintaining the golf course at Andrews Air Force Base.

Nobody here posting was going to that site, they didn't know about it, look at the drivel being spewed. They would have googled has they not had some spin to blowhole and it was something of substance.
