It is a time when social barriers take a back seat to wild abandon and fun.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!!!!!

Good point! And to you too :-)

The best explanation I ever heard for Halloween (Samhain) went back to traditions among the Gaelic tribes that rather died back and were diluted with the massacres of the Druids in Roman Britain. What I heard:

In the old druidic calendar, Samhain was the last day of the year when the veil was thinnest to the other world. The spirits of the dead that died in the year would migrate to the Summerland at that time. And, occasionally, there would be visitors from the other side.
A small gift of food would be given to any stranger that called at your door because you never knew who they were and you didn't dare offend one of the fair fold that might come visiting. Some of this is remembered in the concept of the "dumb feast" where a place would be set at dinner for beloved dead just in case they wanted to visit.
If you had to go out, masks would be worn so that tricksy spirits would not recognize you and follow you home.

The halloween of my youth was a fun crazy night that lasted from dusk until midnight. Today, it is a ho-hum trip to the mall so the kids can glean cheap candy.

I like to drag out my copy of "The Raven" on Halloween Night. A campy old Hammer Films production with Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Vampirella (before she was outed as lesbian and her career died, Elvira was not the original mistress of the dark), Tor Johnson (50s wrestler that became a weird looking thug in many movies) and to top it off a 19 year old and badly acting Jack Nicholson.

Anyway, I'm hoping this job is done and I can be home for Samhain.

Vampires sparkle or wear rings to walk in daylight, the days of Boris Karlof, Christopher Lee, and the vampires of the good old days, now vampires have emotions other than a thirst for blood.

Even Frankenstein and werewolves have lost their scare appeal.

I am seriously considering not hosting my annual Halloween party. Last year I had five vampires from the Twilight saga (nieces friends,) not a single Jason or Freddie, not even a credible succubus or incubus.

None of the classic monsters were around, even in the older party attendees.

And I live across the road from a cemetery which, depending on the weather can be rather spooky.

I find the highlighted part to be VERY scary.

well, druids were never really "that much of a thing" in Ireland, Merc Tech. The gods along the lines of Nuada Airgetlamh and Cromm Cruaich were. Druids didn't deal with Nuada or Cromm, the Irish did. Conan (which is an ancienr Irish and Scots name) was a Cimmerian which was a Latin name for Alba, or Scotland. Conan often invoked the name of Cromm, the "bent God of the Mound", to who people were sacrificed. The respect (or fear) for Cromm spread from Erin/Eire to Alba/Scotland just as the people did. Like Mormons took their articles of Faith from where they began and the Golden Tablets ended up in Utah. (Which, ironically, has a lot of ex-mormons now adhering to what they believe to pagan Gaelic beliefs).

I skipped through the thread.
I'm taking the brat and a few of her friends trick or treating. (Yes I want candy too, I'm grown and don't give a fack!!!)
Hubby will stay and scare the crap out of ppl here at the house.

Ya know what? There are only three houses here decorated for Halloween. And I hate that. When I was little every house had something. Christmas is almost the same. I wish everyone would get in the spirit and decorate. I'm not talking religion, I'm talking lights and a Santa clause if that's all one wants. But dang., what happened to going riding and looking at kick ass Christmas lights?
Decorate people!

Decoration costs money, it's a GFC.

also I would never ask anoyone in a house with a victim of the pandemic of new Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to buy into the candy-industry bullshit.

The candy I understand....

What's a GFC?

DesFIP -> RE: What has happened to horror and holloween? (10/16/2013 9:10:52 AM)

Here, they've started fining people for excessive displays. Apparently it causes a traffic hazard. If you don't have sufficient parking, don't decorate.

And there's something wrong with that.

Omg, are you serious?

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: What has happened to horror and holloween? (10/16/2013 3:57:54 PM)

If the local government told me I couldn't do what I want with my own property I'd make the most extreme Halloween display ever. Just to be pissy.

GFC: Global Financial Crisis.

many people are cutting back on everything. shops closing left and right... so over-spending on a Holiday that for most people is merely more money spent at the dentist and a re-run of Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, better to save for X-Mass.
