Vampires sparkle or wear rings to walk in daylight, the days of Boris Karlof, Christopher Lee, and the vampires of the good old days, now vampires have emotions other than a thirst for blood.

Even Frankenstein and werewolves have lost their scare appeal.

I am seriously considering not hosting my annual Halloween party. Last year I had five vampires from the Twilight saga (nieces friends,) not a single Jason or Freddie, not even a credible succubus or incubus.

None of the classic monsters were around, even in the older party attendees.

And I live across the road from a cemetery which, depending on the weather can be rather spooky.

Are you kidding? Nowadays, it's pretty much 100% gals dressed as Hoes. Halloween is the latest slut it up holiday and I totally approve. I love it. Go downtown on all hallows and you'll see more flesh than a porno. It's awesome.Almost makes me long to be single-like shooting drunk fish in a barrel

No vampire, monster, ghoul, werewolf, or other Halloween horror has a prayer of being anywhere near as scary as House Republicans these days.

no, it's a several thousand year old Pagan Irish Tradition and festival that was transported to the USA where lazy ass hick-ass hayseeds seeds turned it INTO (for some people) a kids holiday, which was more comfortable for the bulk-populace that were not comfortable with pagan-y things (like the Fundamentalists who have the shits with the easter Bunny, which in fact ALSO comes from Celtic Paganism. Well, not just Irish, quite a lot of what remains of Halloween tradition comes from Scotland. But that aside - who cares? Traditions evolve and change over time. There are no pre-christian celtic pagans around any more (leaving aside those newer religions which have re-claimed some of the old holidays). I don't see the harm in a night of whimsy which makes reference to some old festivals. The world can always use more fun and celebration.

Now that said, a Twilight vampire costume seems like such a waste of a dressing-up opportunity.

Round here zombies are the go-to costume for older kids. A little overdone but some of them do get pretty creative with it. The little ones tend to wear the generic store bought costumes - the witch, the skeleton, Frankensteins' monster, assorted demons in capes and masks. Don't see many home made costumes any more.

I really need a Halloween party.

I DO understand what you're saying but it's like the dumb-arses that actually mistake zombies (sad undead slaves who are not very capable of harming anyone) with ghouls (flesh rending nasty undead beasties). And no, the fact that millions of dumbshits wrongfully use the word zombie" when the creature they mean is "ghoul" means nothing, even in the face of the fact that the mistake has gone on, spurred and created by one stray comment by a character from Night of the Living Dead.

That film, btw, was originally entitled NIGHT OF THE GHOULS. A title which couldn't be used because of copyright problems (that very title had been used not long before and had been properly registered with the Library of Congress, seat of all copyright for the USA).

Flesh Eaters from the grave are still GHOULS, as they have been since the Egyptians coined the original word, "Ghul", over 2000 years ago, and just because Gen X and Y are too lazy to care don't change that. And THAT is what has happened to Halloween, and why it's not scary anyomore. because iTwats and wikiTwats simply resort to the gormless, clitless "wat-evs" response. And why they have very little to offer culturally as compared to the previous folks who's achievements they cannibalize, then excuse as a "mash-up" or a "remake".

Last time I passed out (candy), I noticed a pretty sizable fraction of kids in homemade costumes around here. They local authorities try to encourage parents to use face paint rather than those gawdawful store creations. I saw a couple of really well-done witches (no pun intended), some other classic monsters (Frankensteins, vampires, mummies, zombies), along with some headscratchers.

One in particular struck me as both cool and slightly odd. It was a 4-5 year old boy, dressed like Steve from Blue's Clue's (and I'm seriously stretching my Dom card on knowing that

). Another one was dressed in a costume made from a plastic trash can. Not Oscar the Grouch, but just a talking, candy-mooching trashcan. They rigged the lid up as a hat and cut arm and leg holes for it. Don't know how he held it up, but he was a walking trashcan. Older kid, had the reach, but still. I can just imagine that young genius trying to cross a street in the dark.

It's a relatively new thing here in the UK for trick or treating. My son and step son used to go when they were younger. I made my step son's costume of a wizard with cape, staff and all. The boy used to go as an old film dracular with face paints and make-up.

non of this wishy-washy romantic teenie-bop i'm so moody and in love with a vampire with feelings crap in my house. if you're going to bite my neck off at least be fucking mean and nasty about it because this girl has to get a thrill too.

Most older boys think they can buy a plastic mask, put that on under the normal hoody and the job is done. no effort at all. mostly though it is parents escorting groups of smaller kids around all dressed up. there are plenty of adult outfits in the shops, and certainly plenty of stuff to do your house up with, but I don't know of anyone who actually has parties to celebrate. I do know some people that celebrate actual Samhain though, but that's different.

I guess we Brits wait for the week after and go all out for bonfire night.

In my old neighborhood we had tons of kids trick or treating, which I hugely enjoyed. I used to sit on my front porch with a cauldron full of candy in my witches costume and terrorize the kiddies. Okay so mostly I praised their costumes and cackled a lot.

One year a tiny tot in a bee costume showed up. I asked him what he was, and he turned around and stuck his little behind at me and started stinging me !! Himself and I laughed and laughed while his horrified parents looked on.

Around here kids are still kids, if you let them be. And it's TV that killed the old horror movies, it's hard to compete when every other TV show has more blood and gore than a political convention. The old classics used actual story lines, timing, and suspense, and that art of film making is (for the most part) long lost.

Since I live outside of town, I dont get trick or treaters.

I usually rent a very large flatscreen tv for the party, run av cables from my home server where I have tons of movies stored and set up a playlist of classic horror movies.

Refreshments consists of booze, sodas for non drinkers, and a selection of hot and cold junk food.

Then I have the other living room set up for music and should the need arise, dancing.

As I said, it just seems that adults have gotten a bit lame with Halloween.

Me too. It must be a Western New York thing. I love Halloween! First the kids have a great time and then, once they crash from their sugar high, it time for the adults to party! Bonfires and outdoor jams, wild costumes, good food and good booze!

Halloween is a time to mingle with your neighbors you're normally to busy to mingle with.

It is a time to slip out of mask you normally wear and let some of the inner you peek through.

It is a time when social barriers take a back seat to wild abandon and fun.

Neither the whining of a crotchety old man from Texas nor the ravings of a psycho-bigot from Australia will change that.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!!!!!

And to those of you determined not to have a happy Halloween... fuck ya!

We're going to have a good time anyway!

I have long complained about the lack of scary costumes and creativity (creating a costume).
That, and the lack of scary movies on Halloween (and Garfield's Halloween - I always loved that episode as a kid).
For me, Halloween is about scary characters but I'd rather someone dress up as a princess than not dress up at all!

Many areas warn against masks for safety reasons. I don't do masks for my kids because I enjoy doing their make-up.
Last year was my best, and scariest, yet.

This year, we're dressing together as a family, one theme. I wanted zombies but kids wanted super heroes. Fine, but I'll be the scariest villain I can be!
I purchased two of their costumes but will be tweaking them.
Someone else made the third kid's costume.
I'm making my husband's and my own costumes, along with make-up.

I love Halloween and have always wanted to throw a party, turning each and every room into a room from a haunted house.
One of these days I'll get around to doing it.
