If he's looking for a scholarly book on extreme metal, Extreme Metal: Music and Culture on the Edge by Keith Kahn-Harris is good. (And pretty readable for an academic work). On the second, you might want to get him Führer Ex: Memoirs of a Former Neo-Nazi by Ingo Hasselbach. From the sounds of it, it might be more effective for him to read something by someone who held those views and repudiated them, rather then getting him something from an author who's always been hostile.
