there are many meanings behind that flag, none of which are positive to me. i see it as a symbol of brutality and a few changes shy of the confederate flag. don't be fooled into thinking that other countries don't protest their government openly. that's the news talking and they have the flag somewhere in their background advertisement. when i was in the marines that flag wasn't exactly a symbol of hope to the world. and i had to learn the hard way that i wasn't fighting for that flag or this country, but for oil. other countries know that and they look at that flag and they watch tv and see what america is about through their movies and reality shows. seeing american tv overseas is like watching an asylum, because what kind of moron adopts a symbol for their flag only to have it on the endangered species list?

Anyone that does not think that the government has the right to protect the symbols of our nation, must also feel that they have no right to protect the bald eagle. Laws are already on the books to do so,not just because it is or was endangered, but because it is one of our nations symbols, just as the flag is. Also there is a big difference between displaying the flag and desecrating it.
As a veteran that has given 28 yrs to serving his country, I do not feel that the flag should be treated any different than the bald eagle, both can and should be protected. As far as I am concerned an act is not speech, and therefore burning the flag in protest is not speech it is an act. Not meaning to put down anyones opinion, just voiceing mine here.

Bald eagles are stitched together in a sweatshop overseas?

Or maybe the comparison just doesn't.....'fly'?

..I did say I was a hypocrite, another common trait amongst my country men. But perhaps the point I was making was my complete incomprehension of the importance of the "Flag" to the US. I know some of its hiistory etc but the engrained symbolism of it I do not understand. Perhaps part of it is the daily indoctrination at school with the pledge to the flag (or TV) screen with a flag on it. My sons class mates find it equally puzzling that he doesn't have a pledge and has no equivalent daily ritual of national worship. During the world cup the Cross of St George apparently flew over many houses in England, but quickly disapeared. Occasionally once every 25 years or so there will be celebrations anf people will fly a Union flag for a day but that is about it. Flag manufacturers are not wealthy people in the UK.
