Thanks for the answers all, I went in and reset the hibernation and shut down under the power supply settings, and it seems to have done the trick. It's been up and on and running for 2 days now. I did get a battery just in case.

Lookie, she may be 10 years old, but there's still life in the old girl......never judge an old horse by the gray hair! :p I know it's 10 years old, but until it totally can't be used anymore, I'll run it into the ground. I hate laptops, and can't afford a new desktop right now.

Igor, I never thought of the hard drive either. I didn't realize they go "bad". I had planned on getting someone to look at it anyway, once I'm mobile again, I'll get it done. I just recently moved here, and haven't located a best buy or anyplace like that. It would be better if I could just upgrade the one I have now...hard drive and OS. Maybe at tax time, I'll have a refund coming this year.

Just make sure to back up your data. The computer itself is worth very little compared to the pictures, letters, emails and other documents stored on it.

I'm glad things are back to normal for you. But that error message was just weird (you don't have a laptop) and the question of how your settings got changed remains unanswered. I still think it would be a good idea to run a malware scan.
