I am going to go out on a limb here that the animus this post generated came from the use of the qualifier 'menial' and not just from the notion of assigning tasks. I am not a submissive but I can bet that a submissive will not do something 'just for the hell of it'. He or she needs to feel that what is being done is what you want done and in the manner that you demand. Careless task giving will cause her to have some doubts about your control.

My submissive is a wonderful, independent woman who can do things on her own but part of the power exchange dynamic involves assigning of tasks and having her accountable to them. Assigning tasks for me requires knowing the other person well enough to know what she will and will not respond well to. For instance she accepts being gagged at home whenever practical to do so but has problems with cleaning tasks because she's distracted by how disorganized things have gotten and sorting and organizing causes her to move out of the right headspace. It's different for everybody. Define what you *need* in a relationship and seek someone who covers the essentials and negotiate the rest.

Build in errors and exceptions. Think like a programmer. Don't just say 'always be naked' since that's not realistic. Instead try 'be gagged when home alone whenever practical. let calls go to voicemail and ask for my permission to return the call'. When tasks and rules are unrealistic, they get broken. When they are broken, your control sags. Also consider some lifestyle tasks such as 210 minutes a week in the gym, walk for 20 minutes, etc. Be sure to be ready to justify why this is important. Also keep things open-ended to deal with the vagaries of life. For instance 'be hooded for 14 hours a week total' works better than 'be hooded every night from 8p-10p.

I am no master, but heck, I could find things for people to do. My poor assistant looks at the list of things I have for her each month, and in the sweetest, squeakiest voice says, "all of them?" to. which I laugh and say, "no. just the top five. You choose which one to do first." She is studying for the gre which she takes next week, so my tasks for her this time were these:
1. study
2. sleep well
3. eat healthy food
4. do something fun the day before the exam so you are relaxed. (she doesn't drink alcohol, so no need to tell her not to)
5. on the day of the test, wear clothes that are comfy and make you confident, use a pencil that fits comfortably in your hand, and take deep breaths.

Does this mean I can capitalize my name now? Oooooo....
