FR I don't know the type of environment you work in but I've had to work alongside quite a few ignorant folks. Not religious, for the most part, but certainly bigoted and racist. I just go for 'I find that extremely offensive. What you just said was racist/homophobic/judgemental/inappropriate for work. Please don't say things like that to me again.' In my experience, 9 out of 10 people will stop at this. Most people, even when they are cringing inside, will either smile and nod, or just ignore it and change the subject because it is so uncomfortable. When somebody challenges them directly in a calm way, they generally feel shamed and shut up. Failing that, I've found a consistent 'You know how I feel about that, and I won't discuss it again' eventually puts an end to it. I've found it's best not to debate their issues - there's a time and a place for that, but it isn't at work. They just get more worked up and it feeds into their anger. And yes, talk to your boss and ask him/her to have a discussion about what is and isn't a suitable topic for work. (Honestly I'd also be tempted to say 'Since I'm going to hell any way because of my tattoo, there's really no point in trying to change my mind on these issues' or 'I have no desire to follow a god who behaves like that' but probably not worth it at work)
