actually given the choice the pig is one of the cleanest creatures there is........... it's rare for any animal to choose to live in squalor, but all commercially reared barn animals will be deep littered.

I should have read just one more post!!

I realize this is going to be a dreadfully unpopular suggestion (and that's all it is, a suggestion) but Morning Star brand makes a very good "fake" bacon alternative. If you are trying to lose a few pounds or are just being more mindful about cholesterol, ect, it is a convincing substitute. It's at Walmart (shudder), Target, ect. I hope that helps!

It's a soy product loaded with chemicals to make it taste like meat.

Then there's the great "Cholesterol Myth".

I keep well away from fake meats made with soy bean; they are all dreadfull at very best.

Who wants fake stuff full of chemicals to eat??
Fastest way to the grave if there ever was one.

Lookie, according to a recent study, eating a lot of bacon can lower the sperm count....

That's really immaterial....bacon is always the solution.

(Even if it is the problem).

If there's ever a question (and frankly, the actual question is somewhat moot)....the answer is....

"More bacon".

Holy crud... everything makes sense now....

It's all becoming clearer now isn't it?

As previously stated, MorningStar was merely a suggestion. Are you truly under the assumption pigs are not loaded with antibiotics and growth hormones known to cause infertility in both men and women?

needlesandpins -> RE: Someone needs to pay, maybe. (10/23/2013 5:36:01 AM)

here in the UK they are not because we have banned out animals being reared this way. so i'll take real meat over what you're suggesting any time. as always you should vote with your pockets and support farmers that rear their animals in better ways. i know there are always going to be people that say we shouldn't eat animals at all, but we do, and have done ever since we were capable of catching them. however, the least we can do is make sure they are reared in better conditions. after all it does make them taste better.

I quite agree!!

I think this is something our cousins over the pond don't realise.
We have banned most of the bad practices in animal rearing and banned virtually all additives to livestock feed as well.
I think the only thing we have left in any sort of numbers are battery hens for eggs.
Just about all other animals, including pigs, are kept outdoors in open fields.
Even our crops don't have as much fertilizer and chemicals as those in the US and we don't allow GM crops to enter the food chain - human or animal.

And after tasting US sausages and bacon, our stuff over here is far superior in taste and better choice.
Even the milk over there has added sugar unless you buy the sugar-free variety.
Here, our milk is just filtered and pasteurised - nothing else is added.

Anyone who buys mass market meat of any kind is doing themselves a disservice. Buy from a small producer unless you are really really poor.

I got news for you...
A large proportion of our supermarket meat comes from small producers.
In most cases, they can track each and every piece of meat to the individual animal, right back to the farm where it came from.

At least they can over here.... maybe not in the US.

I buy store bought bacon only when I run out of wild pig bacon, which I prefer and I know that has a low fat content. I used to buy my pork, beef and even buffalo meat from a local producer but he ceased operations last year because production costs got too much due to the extended drought (damn yankees are hoarding the rain up north.)

Unfortunately, the local independent butchers have been run out of business by Walmart, HEB, Albertsons and United super market chains. The nearest independent meat producer is about 2 hours away, and when you count gas costs, it really isnt worth the trip.

eulero83 -> RE: Someone needs to pay, maybe. (10/23/2013 2:06:48 PM)

that's why it's important to care about quality of food, if there are no more professional butcher's shop it means quality of food is not part of the culinary culture.

well if you use 1 pound bacon a day you can raise your own pigs

If wild boar is as plentiful down there as they say I'd build myself a smokehouse and keep it filled with ham and bacon. There isn't a season or bag limit on them right?

Really??
When your cost of gas is averaging only $3 a gallon?? Sheeesh!!

If it was as expensive as ours at around $8+ a gallon that might be a coherent argument.
But $3 or less??  Aaawwww, c'mon jlf. That's no real excuse for decent food!

I think it's just different culture, in all our grocery stores or big supermarkets if you ask for dry curing ham you can choose one out of three kinds Parma or San Daniele that are protected designations with stritch production standards and one cheeper, if people didn't care about quality but just price there would be just three cheeper kinds and maybe Parma in gourmet stores.

Different meat eulero.

We are talking bacon, not ham.
Completely different cut and different uses.

yes I know, but we don't use bacon so much, so I could not compare the situations, if you are in an italian grocery store you'll hear 70% people asking for ham or smilar stuff, 20% mortadella (maybe you call it bologna) or salame maybe 10% or even less for pancetta (it's the closest thing to bacon we have).

You have plenty of bacon in Italy - I've seen it and bought it on my travels.
Maybe not quite so common locally where you are but it is certainly freely available.

Pancetta: Belly cut, seasoned with salt and lots of pepper, rolled, unsmoked.
Bacon: Belly and/or Back cut, unseasoned, not rolled, comes smoked or unsmoked ('green' bacon).

Quite a world apart I'm afraid.
Ham is usually a cut from the leg or loin, not the belly or back.

yes sure, we also have a lot of protected designations kind of pancetta, but it's not something we eat on daily basis, we use it here in the north for carbonara or amatriciana (in the center they use guanciale that's from the cheeck) I roll pork fillet in it and roast it, but the main use is like for ham, thin slices and eaten with bread. No italian will ever have breakfast with becon for example.

not every kind of pancetta is rolled where I live it's usually not rolled, and I know where the ham comes from I just say bacon is not part of our eating habits like in the usa or uk.

Try telling that to the hundreds of other Italian truckers that I met when I travelled through Italy for 10 years.
Bacon butty and something like an English breakfast were quite common and available all over the country in almost every eatery I stopped at.

I never tried MacD's over there but surely they must have the same menu for a bacon burger or bacon & egg breakfast roll? It looked the same as the English, French, German, Spanish and other MacD's I've been into, including the ones in the US.

I think you must live in a very restrictive part of Italy or don't venture too far from home.
