Status: offline 		Sorry about the length of this, but I wanted to give a detailed description of the problem.

A few weeks ago I got my PC back after having a friend rebuild it. He works nights and has a fairly busy family life so it may be a while before he can take a look at it to see what is causing several issues.

One of the priority issues that I would rather not wait on has to do with JAVA and anti-virus software. I play a lot of games at Pogo.com, and most of the games I enjoy run on JAVA. After getting the computer back, I loaded Avast free anti-virus software and all was well for a while. I've had both Avast and JAVA on other computers and never had a problem. One of the programs I wanted to use was not compatible with IE10, and in trying to load IE9 I lost both and so started using Firefox.

Everything went fine for a couple of weeks. Then I tried to play one of the Pogo games, which I had played frequently up to this point, and got the message that JAVA needed to be updated. After repeated attempts to update JAVA, including uninstalls and reboots, I could not get the games at Pogo to work and always got the message that JAVA needed updated. Finally I decided to try Google Chrome, and so downloaded it. Ta da! Pogo games worked fine with Chrome. For 2 days.

Two days after the Chrome install I decided to try a shareware upgrade to Avast that offered more protection to the computer. Now I start getting the "Your JAVA needs updated" on Chrome. So it clicked...something about Avast was causing the problem. I started looking for various firewalls, etc. but no matter what box I checked or unchecked nothing changed. Finally in desperation I uninstalled Avast, and JAVA started working again on both Firefox and Chrome.

I then reinstalled the basic free version of Avast, and again both Firefox and Chrome stopped allowing JAVA.

So, is anyone acquainted with Avast, JAVA, Firefox, and Chrome enough to offer any possible solutions. Or can you recommend a decent free (or reasonably priced) anti-virus software that is compatible with the JAVA, Firefox, and Chrome combinations? I'm almost afraid to load another anti-virus for fear that the problem will re-appear, but even more concerned about not having anti-virus installed.

Also...one or two days after first getting the "JAVA needs updated" messages on my PC, I also started getting the same message on my laptop, which had been working fine for as long as I've had it, up to that point, using both Avast and Firefox.

I'd suggest getting the newest version of avast free. Make sure to auto download the newest virus definitions and then try and manually install java from the sub website.

Status: offline 		I recommend ESET. or Anti-MalwareBytes. Avast is crap. The Microsoft Defender is quite OK and usable aswll.
Run/install only one such app!

Stay with Firefox as browser, if needed get the IE emulator plug-in. IE is total M$ domination garbage
insensitive to what users need.

The java update notice comes from their server update push.
No need to go and update like mad all the time.

Less is more!

Thanks for the info. I'll look into ESET...had not heard of it before. I've had Avast on a couple of other computers and never really had any problem with it until now. Also had not heard of the IE emulator plug in. There are features of IE that I do like better than the others, but not anything I can't do without. I've just used it for years and am used to it, I guess.

Normally I don't get every JAVA update, and in fact have run into issues with updates before. This time, when I would get the notice it wasn't offering any options. I tried to find an older version to load and didn't have any success at that. Right now, without Avast, JAVA and everything else seems to be working fine.

If I remember right, I first just tried to install IE9. Usually when I have tried to install an older version of something I get a window saying something like, "The version you are trying to install is older version of what is already installed. Are you sure you want to continue. Yes? No?" I'd click on "yes" and the job would be done. I didn't get that option this time. It simply wouldn't install IE9. So I uninstalled IE10, then tried to install IE9 again and got the message that IE9 was already on the computer. No other options. But there were no desktop icons, no toolbar icons, no task bar icons, no mention of it in the start up menu, and mention of it in the uninstall programs list. So I later tried to load IE10 again, and again getting the same message that it was already installed. Yet no icons, and no listings that I can find. Even used the search function and got one mention, but it wasn't the program. So I'll wait for my computer guy to look at it. I can make do with Firefox and Chrome until then, though I might try the IE emulator plug in that was mentioned in a different post.

Internet Explorer doesn't appear in the Installed Programs list on my computer either (Windows7). You have to click on "Turn Windows features on and off" to find it. Since the system is reporting that it's installed, it may be deactivated. If so, just check the box and you should have it back. If it's already activated but you don't have an icon on your Desktop, that's easy to recover. Just navigate to Program Files > Internet Explorer, right-click on "iexplore.exe," and select "Create Shortcut".

Status: offline 		What I missed in the OP's post is the operating system. I assume with IE 9 or IE10 the OP is running with Windows 7 or Windows 8. My personal experience with Windows 7 was it was ok to be polite. Windows 8 is a virus in itself. IF I could, I'd give it back to the Indians and drop it in the ocean in the handoff.
I'm not a gamer, but if there is nothing on the computer, I'd format the drive and install Windows XP, Vista or if you must no later than Windows 7.
Then slowly install only what you want or need. I would install the JAVA prior to the AV software of choice.

Status: offline 		If you are using Firefox, click the plugin symbol on the URL line. Click Allow and Remember. I had to deal with 2 days of slots withdrawals.

Well, you were right, the box was unchecked. However, even after checking the box (IE10) and creating the shortcut, I can click on the icon all day and still nothing happens. I can survive without IE for a while, so will just wait for my computer guy to have some free time. Again, thanks for the suggestions. If nothing else, I'm learning more about how some of this computer stuff works!

Yes, the operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium. When the guy built the computer he wanted to put in Windows 8 but I told him I preferred 7. From what I understand, Windows 8 and IE10 are both designed to be compatible with touch screens. That is something I definitely don't need. So he did only install the basics for me and I am slowly adding back the programs I want. But that is part of what started some of the problems. One bit of software I did really want (Freecorder) isn't compatible with IE10. After many attempts to install I finally contacted support at Freecorder and was informed by them of the incompatibility issues. (I do some audio and video editing and find Freecorder to be of great assistance at times.)

So I first downloaded Firefox so that I could use Freecorder with that, then started my attempts at changing IE10 to IE9. Then, although I had had Avast for a while with no issues it started causing issues with the JAVA on Firefox. So I loaded Chrome, and etc. etc. etc......

I did go to the plug-ins page and did the "allow" stuff there. I found several eHow pages with various processes to go through. Sometimes they would say to do such and such, showing a picture of what to look for, but I would get to that point and some check boxes they said to look for simply weren't there.

LOL...don't ya hate when you can't play the games? My favorites are word games at Pogo. Boggle Bash, Crossword Cove, Scrabble, Word Whomp...and most of those run on JAVA. I usually do Crossword Cove every morning just to get my brain jump started. Going without that is like going without my morning shot of caffeine.

I can survive without IE for a while, so will just wait for my computer guy to have some free time. Again, thanks for the suggestions. If nothing else, I'm learning more about how some of this computer stuff works!


Update: The desktop icons still don't work, but I discovered that by going to the start menu I can use IE10 from there. Not only that, but when it started working I also had a working Freecorder toolbar, in spite of the fact that Freecorder support said they are incompatible. I guess they must have made some changes to it or something. Also, I am now using AVG antivirus, and my game sites using JAVA now work.

To all involved, I do appreciate the suggestions and information. Thank you all very much.

I have had to give permission again on a couple of games, but it has been working for over a week now.

Follow the steps outlined below.
