The only thing I know about fashion is that I know nothing about it.

As you can see from my profile picture, I have broad shoulders and a fairly narrow waist. (I believe the official term is "swimmer's body.") My question is this: are there any shirts or tops that would look great on me? Whenever I wear button-down shirts or T-shirts, they end up hanging off my shoulders. Is there some kind of form-fitting and awesome-looking (not necessarily kinky) clothing that would show off the shoulders without looking like a burlap sack?

I know that latex tops look great on pretty much everybody, but male latex clothing is ridiculously expensive... I've rarely seen latex shirts for less than $80. I'm willing to pay for a high-quality product that will look great and last a long time, but I was wondering what other options are out there.

Thanks!

Any well tailored shirt or jacket should look good on your form. I should know since I have always struggled getting a good look since I have fairly narrow shoulders.

I would suggest that for anything you really want to look good in have it fit to you, even most chain men's suit shops will do the needed tailoring.

For casual stuff, tuck the t-shirt or whatever into your pants and pleat it in the back.

shirts with a slim-fit or even extra slim-fit cut should suit your necessities:

stretch cotton T-shirts also with a modern cut will fit you

Your local dry cleaner will have a tailor. Have those button down shirts taken in.

Otherwise, for tee shirts buy underarmour. You can choose from compression, fitted, regular or loose.

If you have broad shoulders, why would the shirts hang off of your shoulders?

Simple answer: T-shirts, deal with it. Button down, have the shirt darted at a tailor. That's what Master does.

I would feel sorry for you but, as women...you won't get much sympathy because 99% of us have various fit problems with clothes!

It is not the shape of your body. Your shoulder to waist does not look out of proportion. You have the classic male V shape BUT you seem to have a smaller frame (someone said if you have broad shoulders why shirts fall off shoulders? because a man with a shoulder to shoulder span of 40" to a 30" waist has the same 10" "indent" as a guy with 35" span and a 25" waist so both appear equally "broad")

You need to look for "athletic" or "tailored" shirts. Most of the major manufacturers produce both "regular" and "tailored" versions the same way we women will see jeans that are "regular " or petite.

Because they (off-the-shelf shirts and T-shirts) aren't form-fitting, so they just hang like curtains with a fairly large gap around the waist hahaha

Great advice so far, guys - thanks!

Are you originally from Ft Worth? The reason I asked is I thought using "guys" for women was a Midwestern thing. When my girlfriends and I want to speak to our group we use "guys".

Also, thanks for the new word, "nyctophilia"!!

Actually, I'm originally from Russia. I've lived all over the place - "you guys" is a West Coast thing, as far as I'm concerned. And you're most welcome.

If you are Russian and you need a woman to basically "dress" you (i.e. take you shopping and find clothing and turn you into her personal Ken Doll for objectification purposes and get off on it on paying for it) you're lucky you don't live in Southern California. Just sayin'.

Ooh, now that's the kind of objectification I've never tried or even considered!

That would be lovely... Actually, when I took a work transfer to Dallas earlier this year, I had an option of moving to central California. I had to turn it down because of the higher cost of living and all the weird little taxes and laws you guys have... I suppose there's always the option of you moving to Texas? :p

I'm not moving anywhere but Canada. But if you actually speak Russian, who knows, maybe I'd do a day trip (lol)

Sounds like a plan! And Canada certainly holds some allure... I tire of this crazy country of yours.

After the last 15 years, give or take a year, you're not alone in those feelings.

In these days of most off the rack clothing being made in asian sweat shops, finding a decent fit is near impossible.
Even trying to find an actual sized button down shirt is impossible... excuse me but men's shirts are sized by neck size, sleeve length (measured from the center of the back to the wrist with the arm bent at the elbow), and either regular, fitted, or loose. All you can find any more is small through some variation of extra larges. If I put on an XL, the neck and chest fit but the arms barlely cover the elbows. If I gram a 4XL, the sleeves fit but there is enough fabric leftover for Barbie's Circus Tent around the waist. Don't even get me on enough fabric to actually tuck the tail into a pair of jeans.
Find a brand that actually follows western patterns and the larger sizes will fit shoulders and not assume anyone that is larger is a five foot sumo wrestler.
Cough up the money for dress clothing that is properly sized. I've found the George Forman line does shoulders and sleeves that fit without leaving a circus tent in the midriff.
For casual and work shirts, the Firefox line makes safari shirts that will fit the bill for wider shoulders.
For sportswear, Underarmor is good but very much overpriced. Tek makes the same stuff at a much more reasonable price. If you prefer cotton to the synthetics that leave the skin slimy after a workout the top of the line Hanes can't be beat. But, dang it, most stores don't carry the top of the line and you have to mail order.
And doesn't it suck that the retailers get in three or four of sizes for wider shoulders and larger chests for every hundred of the average sizes?
Damn that bell curve.

Heh... Don't even get me started on trying to find a pair of decent-looking 32x34 pants. That was my project for September: I visited at least a dozen (!) stores (Walmart, Ross, Kohl's, Target - you name it) and finally managed to find a lousy cheap pair of black pants that look like "busboy special."

No country for slim, tall, broad-shouldered men...

You can also call up a good department store, not Walmarts, and ask for an appointment with a personal shopper. She will know the lines and will gather things that will fit you for you to try on. Expensive but after that, you will know what brands to buy.

Ya, one of the reasons I stopped buying shirts at WalMart is that I had to alter damn near everything. Now that Mom is in her 70's, it's harder to get her to use her sewing machine to make alterations for me

My man is hard to fit because he is very tall. He likes LLBean, who carries his sizes, but not always in the store. We were there yesterday, and he found a bunch of shirts and jeans he likes, none in his size, so brought them down to the kiosk where they ordered everything for him. Most stores do free shipping when you want to buy something from them and they do not have your size/color in stock.

OP - when I was in the military, everyone who cared about their appearance had their uniforms tailored.
