A federal judge on Monday sentenced former Representative Rick Renzi to three years in prison for convictions on public corruption, money laundering and other charges, capping a corruption case prosecutors said began more than a decade ago. Judge David C. Bury of Federal District Court also sentenced a co-defendant, James Sandlin, to 18 months in prison, and ordered both men to pay fines.

Well it seems yet another politician has been caught breaking the law.

There is only one problem with this story, Rick Renzi is a Republican.

So why is that a problem? He did what he did, his politics has nothing to do with it.

There is no problem here, except, maybe, that it took over a decade to end the case. My only question is, if the sentence is typical for the charge, or if it's lighter. If it's lighter than typical, then there is a problem...

The problem is that there is a vocal group that seems to think that only Democrats are corrupt.

And that women who use birth control are sluts.

and that women should not have the choice of abortion,

and only democrats commit voter fraud,

and that the Bush Gore election results were perfectly acceptable, even though a large number of Florida votes were left uncounted, and a conservative supreme court ordered the recount stopped.

Jesse jr. got 30 months for what he did so it seems that Renzi did get off fairly lightly in comparison.

Really? 'Fraid I don't know anyone espousing that opinion set.

Personally, I think corrupt Democrats are both more common, and less likely to get the sort of media coverage their crimes deserve, or just get media cover, as when Jesse Jackson Jr. being sent off to prison for his outrageous corruption was knocked right off the news feed by a state level Republican getting a ticket because he didn't know to set the cruise control at "legal," while toking on a road joint.

I think women who fuck around casually are sluts, just as are men who do the same. I've settled down a bit these days, but at the time I thought the ones on birth control were smarter sluts.

I fully support the right of men to hand a dumber slut a couple hundred bucks, and tell her to get rid of it.

I'd say any voter fraud is a problem, and that the easy solution is require some form of ID, when you tell them your name, and sign your name.

Your link was NYT, and I've now used my freebies for the month (thanks, asshole - I was saving that last one), but if you haven't, or can wait until Friday, I'd suggest you check their findings on the ballots in Florida. The court ordered a stop to a Democrat cherry-picking of which votes to count, and the total statewide still gave the election to Bush. I voted for Nader in that election too, but I did it on purpose.

Nice strawman you built though, JLF. Have fun playing with it.

As to the convicted himself, I would prefer to see MUCH harsher sentences for people who betray the trust placed in them by the public. Think in terms of the crack penalties Bush I supported. Hard time, no parole, and a violent sexual predator for a cellmate.

you think THIS guy is corrupt?

funny thing, in Oz, the 'lefties' lost power by emulating the righties, and BADLY. Partially due to the blither-blather of their malfunctioning constituencies that treated the whole thing like they were the "mean girls' from the film Heathers, and yet were dipshit enough to forget what happened to those bimbos-masquerading-as-tough-girls.

here's 2 for your one, jif. make sure to aske Tweako-matic if she knows any of THESE lassies:
since everyone argued about money and socialized care (which I approve of, when non-dingleberries run the show)

and then we have THIS guy, mr. Super Lefty, oh yeah:

one of the big playas in the politics of so called anti capitalist thinking, yet is this not JP Morgan-ish behaviour?

I was actually referring to some of the more vocal conservative media talking heads, and the more extreme right wing individuals.

I quite agree about the cherry picking of the votes in Florida, what I would have preferred the court had done was make sure all the votes should be counted, rather than just ending the recount. Looking at some independent audits of the votes at the time, I have a sinking suspicion that Bush would have had a slime but clear victory in the state.

Thus my point about the conservative court at the time is the "all or nothing" attitude. There was room for a middle ground that made logical sense, and would have still pissed off the Gore camp, but still.

The same is true when there is a liberal majority on the supreme court.

As for ID for voter verification, I quite agree. I have said repeatedly that a person cannot function in today's society with out some form of picture ID. I have a problem when some states suggested that only a passport be accepted though.

As for casual sex, again, I agree. Women or men with a large number of partners is the epitome of carelessness. However there are more uses for birth control than preventing pregnancy.

Medical conditions that Rush and members of the FOX news staff seem to be ignorant of.

As for political corruption, I disagree, I dont think either party is more corrupt than the other. In my father's home county, up until the seventies, voter fraud was rampant, by both democrats and republicans, which ended when the state stepped in after one person who died in 1912, voted 4 times, twice for democrats and twice for republicans. Not to mention the number of dogs and other animals that voted in elections.

On other points, again in the same county, DA's and sheriff's, again of both parties had a nasty habit of losing liquid evidence in illegal whiskey production.

Up until the late sixties, democrats in the south tried hard to limit minority votes with Jim Crow laws. The trend has shifted with some of the more extreme conservative moves on voter registration and acceptable ID's.

Both parties milk "scandals" to the point of making them no longer scandals but things the public doesnt want to hear about.

The simple fact is that no matter what party, the "our shit dont stink" argument pops up and at that point the debate ends and insults begin.

It has been your and Kirata's posts that have caused a major change in my political philosophy, the last time I registered to vote, I did not list a party, checking "independent" instead.

I did not vote for Romney for one reason, his religion. Having been married to a mormon, there was no way I would vote for one. Yes I let one ex and her fanatic friends bias me against the entire segment of the population.

The only gun control law I am in favor of is more stringent back ground checks. Anything else treads on the second amendment.

I think we need to end career politicians.

Look at List of federal political scandals in the United States to see why.

FYI, contrary to some statements, the Obama administration has had fewer scandals than the Bush years.

And, Ken, if the "crimes" were relatively equal, then the sentences should be relatively equal. I am not in either Renzi's nor Jackson Jr.'s Districts, so, personally, I haven't dug into either case.

Where is this vocal group of which you speak?

Rush is, well, Rush. He makes an awful lot of good points, but makes an awful lot of stupid comments, too. That he has his minions sounds more like sour grapes on your part, but that is going to happen regardless of the political bent of the talking head, provided he/she is good.

Apparently, we agree on Voter ID requirements.

Good Lord, man! Bush/Gore election was almost 13 years ago. Let it go already. At some point in time, you are going to have to let things drop when there is no longer any way to overturn the results. What would the purpose of "correcting" the Bush Gore election and awarding it to Gore? What would there be to gain, at this point in time?

I'm not really an expert on either but a little digging found:
Jackson pled guilty to one count each of wire fraud and mail fraud in the misuse of $750k of his campaign funds.
Enzi was convicted of 17 charges including racketeering, money laundering, bribery and insurance fraud involving a $700k land deal and in "looting" his families insurance company to finance his political campaign.

Because the bigots in question have large listening audiences, where as the same quality of idiots on the left are far fewer than on the right. Since Oberman left MSNBC, the ones remaining seem to be more for comedy relief than actual news.

Then, like I said, if the sentence is lighter than typical, there is a problem. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass whether they are R's, D's, I's, L's, or any other party affiliation. His sentence is a lot shorter than James Traficant's 7 years, too.

Well that can't be right. I keep reading on these vary forums how the republicans are losing followers all the time so where are they getting these larger audiences? How are they preventing anyone on the left from becoming more popular? Now I admit that the posters here seem more invested in coming up with cute little insults than actually discussing facts but surely there must be someone out there that can just discuss the news. Maybe if they spent more time looking for a mouth piece than ranting about Rush bimbo they might find someone but I don't see that happening any time soon.
