I would recommend that you use the more formal "Vous" but, keep in mind; I was raised by the adage: "In polite company, one does not call someone by first name until they're invited to do so". I also hold to that. If I'm introduced to "John Smith", I call him "Mr. Smith" until he invites me to call him by first name.

Really? why would you think that? do you actually know and understand the truth behind what happened when the French were invaded by the Germans and Italians? has your country ever been invaded? and if so how did you respond?

First: France's army did not simply surrender or run away in 1940, as ignorant American conservatives claim.
France lost 2 million citizens in world war 1. It was (at the time) an agricultural society ffs and it was left crippled by the first world war... A war I lost my great grandfather and all his brothers in.

The were already overwhelmed. The French armies were shattered and still trying to recover, when Hitler comes in with his 'silver fucking bullet' and btw, British task forces in France, during the invasion, were beaten quickly back over the channel where they stayed until D day. Truth is, no army in the world at that time could of withstood what was to come from the Germans.
200,000 French soldiers were killed in action, one of them was my grandfather, who left a young wife and 3 children. I don't think any of those men were cowards. They were heroes through and through.

The French resistance was actually quite small but lets give mention to the many thousands of ordinary people who took Jews, gypsies and stranded allied foot soldiers under their wing even though getting caught meant certain death.

Next door to our house is a plaque in memory of a young French woman who worked for the French resistance. The plaque says that she harboured and gave sanctuary to over 50 allies. She was involved in falsifying papers and getting them across borders and this woman was put on trial by the Germans and shot on the steps just across the street. She left behind 2 small children, one of which still lives and has brought her family up in the same house.

I don't know what you learnt as school or what your parents told you but the French being cowards has been an uncalled for bit of propaganda going round since the end of the second world war. Are you aware that it wasn't the US, Britain and Canada that defeated Germany? and the war wasn't won on D day because the German military were already broken on the Eastern Front's from the titanic battles with the Russians. When the allies landed in Normandy, what they met were already battered and crippled German forces.

Status: offline 		I sincerely apologise for any distress I may have caused you Maria, of course we have all lost relatives in that awful conflict, what I wrote was only in jest, as France is our old enemy , I might add though, that had Georges Clemenceau not screwed it to the Germans after WW1, in the Versailles Treaty, ripping the heart out of them, the economic/social conditions that spawned Hitler & his ilk, would not have occurred, saved fifty million lives, & Hitler would have remained in obscurity.

Of course, it's easy to conjecture alternative histories, but, nobody comes out of this smelling of roses.

Status: offline 		Its okay gary, I know we all lost relatives but if the relatives you lost to war were labelled as cowards.... well, say no more. I'm only part French btw ;)

Now about this treaty.
When that treaty was written up in Paris, both the British Prime Minister and the American President along with a huge British and American delegation were present. Both Woodrow Wilson and Lloyd George helped put this treaty together and made some very specific specifications to suit them. All were in agreement that the Germans should be encouraged to sign the Versailles treaty. It was never a single entity but a unanimous vote a League of Nations. Because though, this treaty was written up and signed in Paris, all the blame has always been put on Clemenceau.

I'm sorry for calling you guys 'cowardy custards' . The interwar years of European history is a most volatile & interesting period of history. I was a bit concerned I had derailed the thread over a joke that went wrong.
