Of course. I got a strong impression from the aghast reactions of a lot of people responding to the news story that it was an unusual event.

There is also a pretty strong taboo among many Americans about setting the law on family. I suspect the worst case outcome there, is what kicked the story up to the national news level.

The majority of chases don't end in gunfire here, PFH. One of the reasons you don't hear about the others is because it's not "newsworthy." If you remember the thread about the President acting gentlemanly, my first post was that it was sad that a President acting gentlemanly was even newsworthy (as in, it should be commonplace and expected).
It's when things that aren't commonplace occur that it's news and reported on.

Of course. I got a strong impression from the aghast reactions of a lot of people responding to the news story that it was an unusual event.

Is there any set of circumstances, outside of the perp firing at officers, that your locals would shoot?

Highly unlikely because they almost certainly wouldn't have been armed (with guns). Traffic cops aren't armed. More specialist police would only arm themselves prior to a chase if they thought that the suspect himself was armed which, of course, would also be extremely unlikely in this country.

Gotcha.

Thanks for simply answering instead of... well, if you have been reading, you know... lol

You should have asked how it would have gone in Northern Ireland, and gotten a quick lesson in how Americans don't have a clue what we are talking about, and should shut up about it...

yeah.. cuz at 19 he cant buy smokes himself and cant buy a gun himself.. whats legally left but a car to cause havoc with???

eta- where I grew up I could buy smokes (if I wanted to) at age 18.. if that had been the legal age in this state then the whole incident likely would not have even occurred, since the kid wouldn't need anyone to buy those addicting cancer sticks for him..

In the US, 18 is the age to buy smokes or firearms.

21 is alcohol.

So....let's see here....kid evades law enforcement in multiple and various ways for 6 - 9 miles, topples a trade show exhibit in a park, trade show guy barely escapes with his life and 8 grand worth of shit, multiple other pedestrians are seen scrambling and running for whatever remains of their last minutes on Earth, kid eludes again, gets perp-sideswiped....nothing more on the vid other than the assumption that...kid is down....

Yeah....cops are assholes.

Sure.....

Absolutely.

my take from what I saw in the vids was the kid was backing up the truck when the cops were out of their vehicles & approaching him, so it could be that the kid was trying to run over the cops & not just trying ram their vehicles, in which case, they are gonna stop him using what they had on them, which was their guns.. but that's just my take from watching the vids, especially the second vid..

Yep, that looks possible. Of course, in the UK the cops would have just tried to jump out of the way of the pick-up in that situation. From the video and given the position of the cops in the case at hand, that looks as though it might well have been possible. I don't know.

Well of course they would have, if only those silly americans could be more like them.

1. Even if you're a really good shot (Most cops aren't) shooting the tires of a moving vehicle with a handgun is REALLY difficult.

so they couldn't shoot out the tires but they could shoot the kid?

How did we get back to this ignorant nonsense?

Quoting the OP

"The truck eventually stopped, but Comstock revved the engine and refused orders to turn it off.

McPherson fired six shots into the truck. Comstock died from two gunshot wounds, according to the Iowa state medical examiner’s office. "

If the OP is correct then this is how we got to the situation where a person in a stationary truck was shot and killed. If they had wanted to kill the person driving the truck like a madman and threatening lives then I wouldn't be very surprised, but they apparently shot a person in a stationary truck. I guess a body is a bigger target than a tyre eh?

Did you watch the dash cam footage...or is this all just based on what you read?

Do you think shooting out the tire was going to magically render the truck stationary? You can still drive a vehicle...like an asshole or a normal person...with a flat tire. Hell, I've seen car chases where all 4 tires are flat and the rims are cutting grooves in the pavement...yet the vehicle STILL was moving. Just how long do we put innocent people at risk of injury or death by some asshole in the middle of a tantrum using a full sized pick up truck as a deadly weapon before enough becomes enough?

Which in this situation is no different than refusing to drop the gun when ordered to do so.

You don't set the law on family. This is why.

You should be well aware of the basic laws of physics, unless they don't have those in your country.
How exactly does deflating a tire or tires stop a 200 horsepower engine from propelling the vehicle at lethal speeds?

That question was asked of the last person who brought up tires and they refused to answer the question... can you do a better job?

Shooting out the tires is very difficult 9mms and .38s have been known to bounce off of them.
Didn't you decry the use of warning shots because the put innocent bystanders in danger?
What do you think is going to happen to the bullet after it bounces off or goes through a tire?
The kid is a much better target and the bullets are far more likely to stay in the passenger compartment.
Is your comment an example of saying anything you have to be critical of anyone who uses a gun, or is it an example of how little you know about firearms?

Maybe the kid should have rolled up like a tire, then, eh?

I haven't seen any claims about this, but they shot 6 times at the truck. How many times was the kid hit?

I think I saw that he was hit twice.

then I stand corrected.. Not buying someone smokes sounds like this was a really stupid argument.. supposedly the kid was getting his act together and they were working on jobsite together, so I wonder what dad's reason for refusing was.. smoking is an addiction and in some people its a strong one..

I believe the term for a statement like this is "weapons grade stupidity."
