James Comstock refused to buy a pack of cigarettes for his 19-year-old son, Tyler, and now he’s planning his son’s funeral. “He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him,” James Comstock told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday. “It was over a damn pack of cigarettes. I wouldn’t buy him none. “And I lose my son for that.” Comstock said he’s outraged police shot and killed his son Monday morning on Iowa State University’s campus. THe cops were told by dispatch twice to back off, that they knew the situation/suspect and father.

Really fucking tragic, but a vehicle is very easily a deadly weapon, and according to the report you posted, Lucy, he tried to use it that way. I have plenty of issues with how law enforcement is carried out in my country, but cops will kill people for doing what this dumbass kid did, when his dumbass father set the law on family.

dumb kid, dumber dad.. 19 is a little late to be "teaching the kid a lesson" & for tough love, dad should have been doing that when he was a little kid.. and then to outsource teaching that "lesson" to armed cops.. cops are not family counselors.. what would the kid have done if dad hadn't called the cops and he had some time to cool off and come to his senses? he would have eventually come back (alive) on his own..

~FRing it~ When I first read the story somewhere else, I was wondering what all the hell was going on. But after seeing the dash cam footage, though it is incredibly tragic...I just don't see what choice the officers had. A full sized truck like that could kill someone. He already rammed patrol cars, flung that trailer into traffic after it became detached from the truck, drove the wrong way on a one way street at high speed on a college campus, and then was crashing into things all over the school lawn. There was a tent on the grass, which could have been filled with students. The bumper cars thing over in the trees showed me he wasn't going to stop, throw his hand up, and call it good. If he had hit and killed someone on the campus or perhaps killed an officer or innocent motorist by driving though town like a Class A jackass, people would be screaming for cop blood wondering why they didn't do anything to stop that kid before he killed someone. It was a no win situation. If you call in your vehicle as stolen, you have to expect a hardcore response. If you ram a cop car and drive like a maniac endangering the lives of people, you can't expect the police to come at you bearing kittens and hugs.

The dispatchers dispatch. They have no authority to control situations that they know nothing about. All they can do is give information, reiterate policies, and relay orders from someone who is in the chain of command. They cannot order an officer to walk away from a felony in progress, with the public in potential danger, because they 'know' the subject or his relatives. You don't think the cop could have handled the situation differently, like say shooting out the tires on the car instead of shooting the 19 year old? The kid acted stupidly, for sure, but I'm not convinced it was an offense punishable by death.

I don't think the cops had a choice, and once the kid attacked the cops, well.. you know its not gonna end well..

What wasn't correct in that action? Why did the officer unload 6 rounds into the truck? If the kid is going to ram a police car and further threaten to use the truck as a weapon, what makes you think shooting out the tires would stop him? I'm not saying the kid deserved to die. I'm not saying he didn't, either. There are facts that we may not know that would be beneficial in figuring this out, though.

It was absolutely NOT an offense punishable by death. It was a tragedy, not justice. BUT, and this is a great big but, the kid was out of control, perhaps on drugs (did you watch the squad car cam?) and putting not just the cops in danger. He literally ran over the tent set up at the campus, in the video you see someone scrambling away from the truck. He was putting bystanders in jeopardy. If it was YOUR child on that campus having to run from the truck, what would you have had them do? Shoot the tires out sounds wonderful in hindsight. Not call the cops in the first place probably sounds damn good in hindsight. The cops acted in the heat of the moment. It's what cops do, and why you teach your children to respect them, even if the cops are in the wrong.

Even if you're a really good shot (Most cops aren't) shooting the tires of a moving vehicle with a handgun is REALLY difficult. 2. Why does his age matter? I never said the father was solely to blame, there is plenty to go around in this case. I don't know much about hand guns, but a good gf of mine is an expert target shooter, and she says he's right. Per Himself who has cop friends, cops are trained not to shoot the tires b/c it doesn't work unless you are packing a large caliber long gun and shooting from a stationary position.
