Don't you remember those stapled classified swingers papers at the adult boutique?

And the ads at the back of the local free and 25cent papers?

slavekal -> RE: Before the Internet Arrived... (9/15/2010 6:18:41 PM)

Hit parties that were advertised in BDSM papers and in the free weeklies.  Answered and placed personal ads in the alternative and regular newspapers.  You had to use sort of coded language in the mainstream papers.  And I used to test out the Mistress potential in girls I met in conventional ways.  My first relationship with a dominant woman was with a girl I met in a college English class.

I acknowledge to the ages of wisdom that went into creating Lance's dusty sex . . .  er . . .  I mean dirty sex.

Lance has the Drummer magazine where it is discussed.

Actually, Lance has an almost complete collection of Drummer magazines.

The ads were chock-a-block full of contacts.

For awhile there, the ads all started Pisces Top, Leo bottom, etc.

For some reason #19 is rarer than most.

For a while there, there were SO many codes, most just dropped it (after all, how does one tell the difference between pink - dildoes and coral - "shrimping"?)

Now, TNG seems to think it's kewl.  <OOPS, just dated myself again>  When I lecture on "Old Guard" it is the number 1 most popular topic.  I use "mosquitoe netting" as a good example of how ridiclous it became.  (Outdoor sex.)

Regards, Mr. Orange Hankie, right.
P.S.  Shrimping is sucking on toes - you see, the toes look like little shrimp and.... never mind.

Hey, as long as it's not a brown bandana in the right pocket...
Laughs.

For those who don't know the code, here's Peache's tutorial:

The easiest way I found: sci-fi conventions.  It is still fairly easy.

1) Nobody is concerned about your sexuality.  To people who regularly read and contemplate about alien worlds where sex is accomplished with three or more genders human sex is tame.

2) You always have a topic to start a conversation, "What do you think of "Ringworld"?"  It gets rid of that ackward phase.
2b)  Stay away from the topic "Star Wars vs. Star Trek."   That's not a conversation starter, that's shooting an Austrian archduke in Sarajevo.

3) Did you ever see the costumes people wear at those conventions?  BDSM is more the norm than vanilla; be prepared for COSPLAY though.

MercTech -> RE: Before the Internet Arrived... (9/16/2010 2:09:44 PM)

SciFi conventions?

Gad, wear your most outrageous fetish wear and you won't be ostrasized but have people want to take pictures of their kids standing next to you.

femasoslave -> RE: Before the Internet Arrived... (9/16/2010 5:08:32 PM)

Thank goodness for the internet!!!!!!

Before the internet I was 'kinky'...I was too busy with my career to properly explore my submissive side...I didn't know I was a subby. I would tie up my vanilla partner and do to them what I secretly wished they would do to me.....gee, men love a kinky woman! lol
When and if they did it to me...they would only do it as a means to an end.....intercourse.
It wasnt till my early 30's when there was a major upheaval in my life and I suddenly found more time and I explored the internet that I found out about bdsm and what I am.....for the first time in my life I didnt feel different and so alone.

bloomswell -> RE: Before the Internet Arrived... (9/16/2010 8:54:31 PM)

In the 60's in London's Soho there was a funny scruffy little store that had nothing in the window except some rubber orthopedic devices.
This was apparently 'code' for kink and inside one would find a few cardboard boxes of porn/rubber goods etc and a kinky contact magazine called (I think) Pathways. That tiny magazine opened up a whole universe for me.

I'm amazed at the mentions of 'pick up' fruit stores in this thread. That's a scene I totally missed.

abuddingdom -> RE: Before the Internet Arrived... (9/16/2010 9:38:03 PM)

I've  made a few friends but never really connected with anyone via the internet relationship-wise, D/s, kink, or vanilla.  I know it can and does happen, but in my experience I've had  some great email exchanges then no mutual chemistry when meeting in person. Then there's the ones who go poof! and they disappear eight in the midst of some good email exchanges. Hell, about 3 1/2 years ago I contacted my pretty one on this site and she didn't even reply to me. I got / earned her attention when we met in person a year later........

I actively topped since I was 17, and came into the lifestyle seeking more than that almost 4 years ago.  I did have a couple flings via a vanilla site( but believe me, everyone on vanilla sites aren't vanilla) after my marriage imploded and before finding my local groups (and CM), but over the course of 4+ decades I met my partners, all of them right up until now, the old fashioned way - in person........
