She has problems finding jobs due to being bipolar I guess. I have the same issues trying to find jobs I Can do with my pychical ability limitations.

It's not as easy or as simple to "just go get a job"  There have to be jobs ot be had first of all, they have to be jobs you can do secondly of all. And with out money she can't buy gas to go to said go get jobs. no job no gas. no gas no go get jobbie

Thank you for adding the full story in Feline...I was initially thinking you friend was just lazy and feeling sorry for herself. Being bipolar is a whole different story. I hope she is able to get some assistance and wish I could help more.

When she was denied did she appeal? SSI will deny the first go around so regularlly that it is a given that you have to appeal. I know very few people that get it with the first application, unless they are very young.

I know the application process and an appeal can take up to 2 years, but if she is granted it they will have to give her a back payment to when she first applied.

If she is capable of going to college she most certainly is not qualified for SSI.  My husband is chronically ill and has been on SSI for years.  It's a long difficult process to get on it.  Cash flow has no bearing on whether or not someone will recieve it.  There is almost always an initial denial then a person has to go through the appeals process which usually takes months and an attorney.

If a person can't afford a car and gas public transportation and/or a bicycle is a reasonable alternative.  Something to keep in mind, especially with medical/bipolar issues.  A full-time student can stay on parents insurance until age 24.  It may very well be worth dealing with the strings to get the help for college and keep the medical coverage.

I went through the SSDI process and actually didnt have to grovel through the appeal process.  It took 6 months from application to cash award. I have no idea how I got that lucky. It was my 2nd filiing, 1st one being several years prior which I didnt pursue, just tried to keep things going and did for a while.  I used no attorney, social service, ect...  Mine isnt for bi-polar but Social anxiety disorder and at the time had really bad agoraphobia episodes.

In saying this tho, I am the only one I know that got through the process that fast.

No Gas+NYC=No Problem. We have a wonderful mass transportation system here.
As for being bipolar preventing her from getting a job....I'm diagnosed bipolar, I work 6 days a week, 8 hours a day. If she's soo bad that it's preventing her from working, then no, she won't be able to safely live on her own. As for help getting a job/housing/aid etc...she should talk to her school because they are the best equipped to help her or recommend somebody who can.

SSI will deny people with a legitimate.  Your friend can hire a lawyer to fight for her rights to get ssi.  Some work on commission some for a set fee. To be honest though ssi will not be enough for her to live on her own.  My roommate is on ssi and only gets a little over 600 a month.  He gets about 100 a month for food stamps.  So he has to live on 700 dollars a month.  That is not possible.  I supplement a part of his income.  If I go out to eat I take him with me and pay for it.  I buy all the cleaning supplies for the house and any other incidentals that we need.  So if she does get approved she will still not be able to live on her own.  Their is special housing in some areas that may be able to help one she has an income though.
Good luck to your friend

MD Here if you walk the highway your ass is gonna be hauled to jail.  pedestrians are not allowed on highway.

In california we're not paid to donate blood any more, you get a complimentarry  lil thing of ice cream or something.

To bad too I would of used that idea for myself haha.
Don't know about in newyork though.

I'm on SSI myself and I didn't have to appeal or anything I did have to do this stupid pych evaluation asking if I knew how to draw a man and a woman was I ever sexually abused, can I repeat these frases backwards.

In the long run for her, it's probably best to just hang tight. I know very well the limits of trying to have a life on limited income.

If her and her family could reach some kind of agreement so not to be at each other it would really help.
