MercTech -> Rope? What Rope? (11/11/2013 10:48:32 AM)

What rope do you prefer for bondage play?

I keep hearing "hemp, it has to be hemp" but I personally prefer to use 3/8" Dacron. I do keep some traditional Japanese silk rope for colorful shibari but prefer woven Dacron for most rope applications, not just playtime.

Looking to fuel some discussion,
Stefan

I like a bit of colour to contrast the girl's naked flesh so the biege & boring hemp was never a favourite.

I prefer the woven poly ropes - immensely strong and flexible, very limited stretch and no itching or scratching the subject. I find 3/8 (10 ml) to look a bit big and cumbersome around the average (smaller) female limbs so tend to use mostly 8ml and occasionally 6ml.

And (believe it or not), the cheap Chinese crap products have helped here. At the local hardware mega store, masses of cheap poly rope in a myriad of colours that isn't actually fully woven. It has a soft single core wrapped in a thin woven poly jacket. I'd never trust it for tying down a load on my trailer but for bondage, the "soft" really comes into its own. Is inclined to stretch more than proper woven poly, which makes it more of a challenge to tie properly as my first rule of bondage is that she has NO CHANCE of escaping - balanced by the 2nd rule of safety; the subject isn't injured or otherwise distracted by uncomfortable binds.

Yeah, rope rules! [8D]

I like 1/4 inch poly. I buy it off the reel at Home Depot.

I use fire on the cut ends to prevent unraveling but shave the final result with a knife to remove abrasive edges. If you run it through the washing machine it gets a little softer.

No rope, I don't like rope.

Steel, and padlocks are my thing.

The bigger the better.

Leather if necessary for suspension and stuff. Locking.

We're lazy, and have a bunch of leather straps for bondage.... And he spoils me shitless with custom steel <3

MariaB -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/11/2013 2:51:45 PM)

I like jute and hemp for general bondage. Something about that organic smell and its soft suppleness once its been treated. I use 9mm and 6mm.

If I'm suspending I use a polyamide 8mm static cord.

Same here. In another thread I pointed out both my ineptitude with rope and its pitfalls. I prefer regulation cuffs and medical-grade restraints myself, with keyed-alike padlocks. No muss, no fuss, no bother, and if there's an issue, it doesn't take thirty minutes or paramedic shears to release someone. For 'fast' scenes, or one where there's the element of surprise, cable-ties fit the bill perfectly, although one must be careful about ensuring proper blood flow and nerve constriction.

A rope scene does take longer. I generally allow at least two hours for those. I like hemp. the conditioning process does take a while, but it's worth it. As far a boring beige...well a bottle or two of Rit dye and you can have the whole rainbow of options. Sometime some cotton clothes line offers a lot of options. It's cheep enough you can destroy it at the end of play.

lovethyself -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/11/2013 4:45:54 PM)

The open practice sessions I've been going to has jute to borrow if you don't have your own rope. I've been finding that I really like the slightly scratchy feel of it. They also have it in a variety of colours (most prevelant is orange, red, and blue). I haven't actually been tied in a scene setting, so I'm not sure if I'd still be happy with the scratchiness when struggle play was added.

As I experiment with others on different knots/ropes combos, I'm finding that the jute has a better friction grip when hooked against itself than it's nylon counterparts. Things that I would have never trusted to hold with the poly rope actually stays where you put it with jute. And if you're unsure, an extra over/under helps lock it in. I've got some non-kinky experience tying load bearing knots and non-slip knots with nylon or poly rope, and it's a big difference from what I've learned so far with the jute.

I'm still getting looks from the person that showed me my first single column tie. When I was having difficulty with it and he offered to help explain it (it was a workshop), I deconstructed his knot to show him why it has the ability to slip. That's when I learned that not all rope works the same.

I haven't committed to buying my own yet, but I think that's next on my list now that I have partners to learn and practice with (how I managed to find 3 partners for this, I'm still not sure, but life is good. Busy, but good).

Yay rope!!!! big grin

MasterCaneman -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/11/2013 11:34:20 PM)

The only rope I've ever used was military surplus 11mm climbing rope (4500psi), and that was only because it was A: on sale cheap, B: the rope guys at the club I worked at swore by it, and C: I used it for rappelling and rock climbing when I had the chance.
Some of the earlier-issue stuff had a mixed-fabric sheathing, but the 'naked' rope worked just fine. Good balance between suppleness and friction right off the roll. Only reason I didn't get into it was the time factor and the fact that I suck at knot-tying.

SunTzuSwe -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/12/2013 1:40:56 AM)

I pick 1/4" Jute rope, hands down. It's coarse so the friction will aid the rope locking in place without much knots. It's cheap, soft and flexible as well. Even though the rope is is "rough", it's fairly smooth to the skin and will leave a nice pattern without rope burn/skin irritation. If I'm not mistaken jute is actually the preferred rope used by most traditional Japanese shibari masters as well, but don't take my word for it. (My memory is a little vague...)

TNDommeK -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/12/2013 2:47:25 AM)

I with Focus on this one. If I'm gonna take the time to do pretty knots and such, I atleast want color.

Dunno about "preferred" so much as it seems reasonable that jute was about the choice limit in the time of "traditional Japanese shibari masters"....

FR:

I'm also not a big rope person. I do have some nice silk rope I bought years ago, but it's rarely been used.

I like chain, I like leather, I like nice and easy with quick release. For me the whole bondage aspect is secondary to what I'm doing, since verbal bondage works just fine for me, no matter what side of the kneel I'm on.

For me, it's all about the CONTROL, and much less about what physical method I use to get there.

MasterRazz -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/12/2013 10:13:34 AM)

Have to say I don't have a preference - it all depends upon what I am doing.

A more sensual scene and I may use some of my cotton coloured rope. Something harsher and more "aggressive" and I'll use the hemp. If it's torture I have thick nylon paracord [sm=evil.gif]

Some interesting points here....

*Control* has always been the staple core of my D/s, and for the subs I've known and owned. Which makes bondage a natural physical expression of that control and therefore has always had importance in my/our relationships. Yeah, of course the relationship has rules, guidelines and standards of behaviour etc for the girl to follow but physical bondage is where I get to be a bit creative, demanding and even menacing in that which I do to her or make her do for me while restrained.

As you'd know from many another topic and life itself, we fellas are are visual bunch so this "verbal" or mental bondage etc is what ranks "secondary". So I don't really get what the biggy is about speed from you and other posters here. In fact, I've rather enjoyed that the typical sub I've known just wants to be restrained and has not always been so tolerant or patient with how long it's taking me to tie the perfect binds. 'Specially when I start unpicking knots 20 minutes in because something just isn't working for me.

It's not enough that she's bound with no chance of escaping (rule 1) or that she's also not injured or unnecessarily discomforted by the binds (rule 2), rule 3 is for me such that the end result is neat, tidy and attractive without distracting from the girl's naked beauty. Practical and looks good - and yeah, that takes time with rope. It's as creative as I'll ever be without ever claiming I'm an artist at it. But what that time factor will never be is a chore.

Last point is that since I haven't posted much lately, I've found it bemusing that half the people who've posted in this thread have done so to tell us they don't like rope at all. All those other preferred restraints, yeah, I use those. No-one's mentioned string, tape or cable ties, btw - I use those, too. Anyway I digress, maybe it's the contemporary CM way that I should take my first venture into the Gorean boards to tell any and all how I don't like or relate to Gorean...? lol

MariaB -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/12/2013 12:14:42 PM)

Tying anything other than a double figure of eight or a bowline would be too bulky with 11mm climbing rope. Personally I will only use static climbing rope in suspension but I tend to go for something a bit daintier than 11mm.

I think coloured rope is a very subjective thing. I like the visual of the naked model and I don't like the rope to stand out more than the subject who is being bound. SunTzuSwe said it all when he mentioned the patterns left on the subjects skin, left by jute rope. That looks amazing!

Being the one who started that off, I will say that I only commented in that manner because I felt the topic title teased for a "no rope" answer.

Had that title been "What rope do you like to use?" I would have refrained from commenting, as I don't really have a preference there.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Rope? What Rope? (11/12/2013 12:49:42 PM)

It's a conversation. People digress, unless they're made to feel they can't or shouldn't. Was that your desired result?

I have to ask why.

I'm always very leery of those who can't take the slightest push back, even when it's verbal and as mild as what I see in this thread.
