Joking aside, OP, I understand why this didn't go over well on Fet. You're inquiry is still pretty much the same as any other "hey, I'm looking for somebody to beat me" kind of thing, so try to have patience with whomever is running that discussion group. They don't know your intentions and you have to cut them a break.
I'm glad you're going out to meet some of these folks. Make some friends. It will work out.
